No. 20 Yellow Jackets outrebounded in road loss

ATHENS, W.Va. – No. 20 West Virginia State University fell on the road to Concord University, 82-71 on Wednesday at the Carter Center. WVSU (21-5, 16-5 MEC) struggled on the boards, leading to a -10 rebounding margin. State outrebounded the Mountain Lions (12-15, 9-12 MEC) 25-20 on the offensive glass, but only grabbed 20 defensive rebounds to Concord's 35.

Anysa Jordan and Emyah Fortenberry both had double-doubles for the Yellow Jackets. Jordan had 23 points and 10 boards while Fortenberry had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Anysa Jordan put the Yellow Jackets ahead with a layup exactly halfway through the first quarter, but a late surge by the Mountain Lions tied the game up at the end of the first quarter, 19-19.  The first three minutes of the second saw just one basket scored between the two teams, a long-range jumper by Concord to take the lead. A WVSU turnover brought the media timeout early on when head coach Charles Marshall called timeout. The Yellow jackets fell behind by as much as 13, but battled back to make it a 10 point game at intermission.

State battled back in the third, tying the game and eventually taking the lead back with a Shelby Harmeyer layup, but State relinquished the lead back six seconds later and the Mountain Lions never gave it back. State closed to within three points at 74-71 with 76 seconds remaining in the game, but Concord hit eight unanswered foul shots for the final score.
