WVSU leads wire-to-wire in senior day victory over NDC

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's men's basketball team warded off the senior day spoil attempt by the Notre Dame College Falcons (16-10, 12-8 MEC) inside the Walker Convocation Center, 86-78. The Jackets (18-8, 12-8 MEC) shot nearly 60 percent in the first half which helped the State take a nine point lead at the end of the first half.

WVSU only managed seven offensive rebounds in the contest, leading to one of the lowest shot totals of the season for State, but the high shooting percentage kept the Yellow Jackets in the lead, and eventually gave them the victory. NDC took 16 more shots than State but made one fewer.

State never trailed in the contest, although NDC did tie the game twice.

Samier Kinsler led all scorers with 22 points, Malik Whittaker scored 18 points, Ibn Loyal added 14 points, and Taevon Horton contributed 11 points. Loyal also grabbed 10 boards to get his fourth double-double of the season.

Kinsler hit a jumper on the very first possession of the game, followed by a Dwaine Jones jumper and a Horton three-pointer to start the game with a 7-0 run through the first minute of the game. NDC climbed back and tied it back up at 12-all prior to the under-15 timeout. State went on a 17-6 run over the next five minutes with Whittaker canning three treys, two layups by Loyal and a layup each from Noah Jordan and Horton, forcing NDC to take their use-it-or-lose-it timeout with just under 10 minutes to play.

Bunky Brown converted an and-one opportunity to grow the lead to 14 points. NDC went on a 14-2 run to shave the lead down to a single basket with 3:30 to play in the half, but NDC couldn't get another point prior to intermission while Whittaker, Horton and Jones all hit buckets to re-extend the lead to nine at the break, 43-34.

Neither team got a run going at the start of the second half, but the Jackets gained three more points on the Falcons, extending the lead to 61-49. Loyal contributed five points, while Kinsler hit three of his four treys during the stretch. The under-15 timeout finally came with an NDC foul at the 12:20 mark. WVSU scored three points to NDC's four over the next two-and-a-half minutes before Kinsler was fouled hard taking a three-point attempt leading to the under-10 timeout.

Kinsler came out of the timeout and stroked all three free throws then canned his final triple of the contest to take the largest lead of the game to that point at 17 points. Jones, Whittaker and Kinsler all hit shots in the paint and Noah Jordan stroked a long-distance trey to give State the 22 point lead at 79-57 with just under six minutes remaining. NDC got as close as five with just over a minute to play, but WVSU scored five of the final seven points to come away with the win.
