State hits 12 treys in road win over Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – WVSU's men's basketball team (19-8, 13-8 MEC) shot over 50 percent in all shooting categories to lift them over the Concord Mountain Lions (14-13, 10-11 MEC) on Wednesday night at the Carter Center, 90-85. WVSU shot 29-for-56 from the field, 12-of-23 from three-point land, and 20-for-40 from the charity stripe.

Taevon Horton and Noah Jordan both scored 17 points to lead the charge for the Yellow Jackets. Malik Whittaker scored 14 points and Ibn Loyal canned 13 points. Horton was the leading rebounder for the Yellow Jackets with eight.

State went on a 10-2 run that lasted just under two minutes, 19-9. Concord hit a trey just before the timeout to close the lead to seven for the Yellow jackets. State regained and maintained a 10 point lead for most of the next five minutes, but Concord hit two straight triples to come within 4 at the under-10 timeout. State regained the double-digit lead, but then Concord rattled off 10 straight points to tie just after the under-5. The final five minutes were back and forth with both teams hitting nine points, but Dwaine Jones hit a foul shot in the waning moments to give State the 44-43 lead at the break.

Loyal opened the Yellow Jacket scoring in the second half to extend the lead to three. Concord then scored four straight to take the lead with just under 18 minutes to play, eventually going on a 13-2 run to put the Yellow Jackets down by eight, forcing a timeout from head coach Bryan Poore. Concord continued the run, eventually hitting 19-2 before Antonio Carter finally broke the drought which lasted almost seven minutes, 62-51. State then went on a 19-0 run of their own when the Mountain Lions shooting suddenly went ice cold, giving the Jackets the lead back, 70-64. The Mountain Lions got as close as two, but State hit foul shots late to take the five-point win.
