Men's Basketball falls to Alderson Broaddus; Kinsler sets career-highs

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The West Virginia State men's basketball team (17-8, 11-8 MEC) fell to Alderson Broaddus (9-15, 7-12 MEC) by a final score of 92-82 on Wednesday night at the Rex Pyles Arena.

Sophomore guard Samier Kinsler led all players on the court with a career-high 33 points. He also made a career-high eight three-pointers in the game. Noah Jordan and Malik Whitaker were the other two Yellow Jackets that scored in double-digits with 12 and 10 points respectively.

There was not much to separate these two teams in the time leading up to the first commercial timeout. West Virginia State barely edged Alderson Broaddus, 11-10, through the first six-and-a-half minutes of the contest.

The score remained tight until the eight-minute mark of the first half when WVSU started a 17-2 run that lasted nearly six minutes. Ibn Loyal, Aboubacar Cisse and Bunky Brown all made shots at the beginning of the run. Samier Kinsler then capped the run by draining three treys in succession. His nine points in a two-minute span left State with a 12-point lead, 37-25.

In the three-or-so minutes remaining in the opening stanza, the Battlers managed to cut the lead down to five points, 39-34, with five seconds to go. Malik Whitaker then caught them off-guard and found Dwaine Jones on the inbound for a buzzer-beating three. After the three-point bucket was confirmed, the Yellow Jackets went into halftime with an eight-point advantage, 42-34.

Alderson Broaddus chipped away at the single-digit lead in the first five minutes of the second half. The tables then turned when the Battlers scored 14 unanswered between the 15- and 11-minute marks. WVSU was suddenly faced with a 10-point deficit, 59-49, to overcome.

State became the team chipping away at the lead after the Battler's run. The Yellow Jackets were able to get back within two points, 70-68, with 5:26 left in the game. Kinsler and Noah Jordan led the comeback effort by hitting two treys apiece. Unfortunately, the comeback concluded there.

AB was able to extend its lead back out to 10 points, 82-72, with a little over two minutes to go. In the closing minutes, Alderson Broaddus did enough to fend off any late heroics by State.

The Battlers made over 50 percent of their shots from the field and from three-point range to topple WVSU.

The Mountain East Conference officially announced that West Virginia State clinched a spot in the MEC Tournament prior to tip-off.  The Yellow Jackets will return to Institute for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 18th. They will take on Notre Dame College with a 4 p.m. start scheduled.
