WVSU sweeps Davis & Elkins; secures at least a share of MEC South Title

ELKINS, W.Va. – WVSU captured their 22nd win of the season with a 3-0 sweep against the Davis & Elkins Senators on Friday. WVSU continued their prowess on both sides of the ball, hitting at a .305 clip and holding their third opponent of the season to a sub-zero attack percentage.

WVSU is now 22-4 overall, 12-1 in the Mountain East. Davis & Elkins falls to 1-24 and 0-13 in the MEC. WVSU has also locked up at least a share of the Mountain East South Division regular season title. Charleston is currently in second place with a 9-3 record in the conference with two matches to go.

Diamond'Nique Young hit at a .500 clip and slammed 11 kills. Jacklyn Simms picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs. She also hit two service aces. Ashlynne Davis led the defensive side of the ball with 18 digs.

The Senators jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but State clawed their way back, helped in part by a 4-0 run with a pair of D&E attack errors and kills by Baby Moleni and Hannah Steele. State took command from there, finishing the set on an 6-0 run with a pair of kills each from Moleni and Simms.

Davis & Elkins again jumped in front in the open moments of the second stanza, 4-1. An 8-0 run by the Yellow Jackets, capped by two Simms service aces, gave State the 9-4 lead. State expanded on that lead during the middle stages of the set and Valencia Wilder sealed the 25-15 set two victory.

WVSU took the early lead in the third set and never coughed it up. State took three straight early with a Young kill, a Kaitlyn Cabral kill and a misfire by the Senator setter. The Senators took those three back right after but WVSU went on a tear, scoring seven straight points with a Cabral service ace, a kill by Moleni and three kills by Simms. D&E never recovered and State took the three set victory.

State will head back into the area with a Monday appointment in Buckhannon for their final true road match of the season against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats. First service in the Rockefeller Center is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
