WVSU sweeps WV Wesleyan; clinches MEC South title and will host MEC tournament

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia State's volleyball team clinched the Mountain East South Division Monday night with the 3-0 straight sets victory over the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats. State ended the match with 14 rejections on the night, half of which came in the final set.

West Virginia State advances their record to 23-4, 13-1 in the Mountain East. The Bobcats fall to 6-19, 1-13 in the MEC.

Diamond'Nique Young led State in kills with 11. Baby Moleni contributed six kills and eight rejections, while Alex Darby had three service aces, and Ashlynne Davis dug 11 Bobcat attacks.

West Virginia State held a lead as high as six points in the first set at 12-6. The Bobcats slowly clawed their way back through the set, then with State holding a 17-13 lead, the Bobcats went on an 8-1 run taking a two point lead late. The Bobcats held a 23-20 lead, but State score the next five points with two Moleni kills, a Moleni rejection and two Darby service aces to steal set one from the Bobcats.

State raced out to an 18-5 helped in part due to seven Bobcat attack errors and a service error. Kaitlyn Cabral led the offense with two kills during the stretch. Set two ended almost even with State securing seven points and the Bobcats taking six. Cabral added one last slam to take set two.

State didn't take their first lead of set three until late in the set at 18-17 with a block by Moleni and Valencia Wilder. Wesleyan then took the lead right back and held it until the waning moments of the set. The Bobcats looked like they could steal a set from State when they took a 23-21 lead, but Young had a hand in the final four points of the match with three kills and a block with Natalie Beer.

West Virginia State will wrap up the regular season in Institute with a rematch against the University of Charleston Golden Eagles on Thursday night, then will prepare for the Mountain East Tournament which will be held in Institute following Wheeling's Monday night loss to Notre Dame College.
