WVSU dominates set four to break 11-year drought against Hilltoppers

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – WVSU hit .400 in the fourth and final set of the match and held West Liberty to a .000 in the same set to win their first match against the Hilltoppers in the Mountain East era and their first since 2012, 3-1.

West Virginia State advances to 20-4 on the season, 10-1 in MEC play. West Liberty drops to 19-7, 8-3 in the MEC.

Diamond'Nique Young had 13 kills for the Yellow Jacket offense to go with four blocks on defense. Kaitlyn Cabral picked up her third double-double of the season with 12 kills, 14 digs, and four blocks. Baby Moleni added 12 kills.

Defensively, Ashlynne Davis led the team with 18 digs. Kiersten Eggleton picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 24 assists and 10 digs. Jacklyn Simms was one kill shy of a double-double. She added 10 digs and nine kills.

State and West Liberty battled each other through the first set, with State taking a teensy 9-8 lead. West Liberty then ripped off a 4-0 run to take a 12-9 lead. State then took the next 3 points on the back of three straight West Liberty attack errors. The Yellow Jackets and the Hilltoppers then traded points until West Liberty led 18-17, when State went on a 7-1 run to give them four set points. West Liberty scored the next point, followed by a Simms slam to seal set one.

Set two, in contrast, was a set of runs. West Liberty took a 7-6 lead early in the set. WVSU then strung together a 7-1 run kicked off by a Young kill and helped along by six West Liberty attack errors. The Hilltoppers went on an 11-2 run to retake the set two lead, 19-14. State then went on a 10-1 run, again giving them four attempts at set point, 24-20. West Liberty took the next five points, giving the Hilltoppers set point at 25-24. The two teams battled for the next four points, but a Hilltopper service ace eventually completed the rally and tied the match up at one set apiece.

Set three started with a kill by West Liberty to take the first point. State then took seven of the next eight points with two West Liberty attack errors, a block by Young and Natalie Beer, and kills by Young, Cabral, and Simms. State's lead eventually ballooned to seven points at 15-8. Late in the set, West Liberty attempted to start another rally with State leading 22-18 and they came within a single point at 22-21. State took three of the next four points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Set four was another set of runs, but they were all by WVSU. State took the first point off of an Eggleton kill, and never relinquished it for the rest of the match. Cabral started a 9-1 Yellow Jacket run, halted briefly by West Liberty, but then a 8-2 run followed, giving WVSU the 23-8 lead. Each team scored two points and a Wilder slam finished the match in favor of WVSU, ending an 11-year winless streak against the Hilltoppers.

WVSU returns to the Walker Convocation Center for their penultimate home match of the season against Glenville State on Tuesday, Oct. 31. First serve for the MEC South showdown is scheduled for 7 pm.
