WVSU Volleyball wins 21st straight match against Glenville State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State went into Tuesday's match without losing to the Pioneers from Glenville State since 2013, and following the 3-0 sweep of the Pioneers, State has now won 21 in a row, and 24 of the last 25 matchups against Glenville State. The Yellow Jackets were efficient and consistent on the attacking side of the ball, hitting at a .386 clip for the match.

WVSU is now 21-4, 11-1 in the MEC South division. Glenville State falls to 8-17, 3-9 in the MEC South.

Prior to the start of the match, seniors Heather Young, Diamond'Nique Young, Alex Darby, Sidney Foster, Peri Martin, Riley Westbrooks, and Natalie Beer were recognized and honored for their achievements while in a WVSU uniform.

Jacklyn Simms led the stat sheet in all three phases of play. She had 15 slams, 15 digs and six service aces. Diamond'Nique Young was also in double digit kills with 13, and she contributed four rejections. Kiersten Eggleton led with 25 assists and Natalie Beer had a team leading five blocks.

With State leading 6-5 in the first set, WVSU put together an 8-1 run thanks to a pair of kills by Kaitlyn Cabral and Baby Moleni, an ace by Lauren Johnson, a kill by Simms and a rejection from the duo of Moleni and Valencia Wilder. The Yellow Jackets closed the set with a 10-1 run, capped by an Ashlynne Davis ace.

State raced into the lead in set two, scoring the first three with a kill by Beer, an ace by Eggleton and a Glenville State attack error. State ended up taking 11 of the first 15 points in the set. In the middle of the frame, a Wilder slam kicked off yet another WVSU run, this time 6-1 to take a 10 point lead in the set, 18-8. The teams traded the final points of the set and another Wilder slam gave State the 2-0 match lead.

The opening of the third set was close, but then Glenville State went on a run to take a 14-11 lead. Following a Hillary Hurley timeout, however, Simms caught fire, slamming four with a block by Beer and Young thrown in and WVSU closed the match on an unconscious 14-1 run, stealing the third set from the Pioneers and closing the door on any potential rally.

WVSU heads up I-79 for their final two regular season road matches, beginning with Davis & Elkins on Friday, Nov. 3rd. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
