WVSU sweeps Salem in under an hour

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's volleyball team held the Salem Tigers to a sub-zero hitting percentage in a three-set sweep of the Tigers in WVSU's final non-conference match of the season.

WVSU advances to 18-4 on the season. Salem falls to 3-16.

State opened the match with serve and Kiersten Eggleton served nine straight points, five by service ace. Salem took two of the next three before Diamond'Nique Young slammed State's 11th point of the set. Ashlynne Davis then served 10 straight points with a pair of service aces, two kills by Kaitlyn Cabral, and another slam by Young. State cruised to the 25-3 set one win. 

Salem got off the schneid in set two with a service ace. State took the next five points with kills by Natalie Beer, Jacklyn Simms, and Baby Moleni. At 7-3, Moleni gave State serve again with a kill. Davis came to the line and Cabral fired a line drive to the floor, 8-3. Davis then served at four different Tigers and picked up service aces each time. State went on another 5-0 run later in the set, 19-5. Heather Young closed the set with her first kill of the match, 25-8.

State hit over .700 in each of the first two sets. Salem hit -.500 in the first set and -.045 in the second.

Eggleton opened the third stanza with another run, this time going 7-0. The teams began to trade blows for the next several points, 14-6. Salem took four straight points with four straight Yellow Jacket attacks that went long. State recovered and took six of the next seven and a block by the duo of Ryleigh Clayborn and Alyssa Hill concluded the match after 51 minutes.

Simm led the offense with eight kills on 11 attacks. Davis dug out nine Salem attacks and added seven service aces. Eggleton also had seven aces and added 20 assists.

State returns to the Walker Convocation Center on Tuesday, Oct. 20 for a 7 pm match against the Concord Mountain Lions.
