WVSU Volleyball sweeps Concord at home

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State Volleyball took all three sets Tuesday night against the Concord University Mountain Lions inside the Walker Convocation Center.

WVSU advances their record to 19-4, 9-1 in Mountain East play. Concord falls to 14-10, 4-6 in the MEC.

Baby Moleni slammed 12 kills and three blocks to pace the Yellow Jacket offense. Jacklyn Simms led the defensive line with 12 digs and added seven kills. Kaitlyn Cabral added 10 digs and a pair of kills. Natalie Beer had two solo blocks, four block assists and a blocking error to go with four digs.

MEC kills leader Meg Williams led the Concord offense, but was held to eight kills, well below her average of four kills per set. Libero Allie Davis led the Mountain Lions with 16 digs.

It was a power struggle in the first set with each team trading the first 14 points. Kiersten Eggleton and Simms then served a 7-1 run for the Yellow Jackets to put them up 13-8. Concord then strung together a 5-2 run. A Moleni slam gave Cabral the serve and she served four straight points including a set error, attack error, block error, and reception error by the Mountain Lions. Following a Concord Timeout, the Mountain Lions immediately forced a side-out, but State took five of the next seven points for the set one win.

State raced out to a 3-0 lead immediately with a Concord service error on the opening rally, an Eggleton service ace, and a Simms kill. With the scoreboard showing State up 7-4, Peri Martin took serve and took four straight points. Lauren Johnson served up a 3-0 run, Simms served another 3-0 run, then Davis served a final 5-0 run to close the set at 25-9.

With State trailing in the third set, 8-6, Lauren Johnson stepped up and served seven straight points for the Yellow Jackets that included a pair of service aces, a pair of slams by Moleni, and a kill by Simms to give State the 13-8 lead, before a dump off by the Concord setter ended the run. The final set remained close the rest of the way and Hannah Steele sealed the set win against her former team, 25-21, and gave State the 3-0 match victory.

WVSU heads to the northern panhandle on Friday for the regular season's final cross-divisional match and hopes to end an 11-year drought against the West Liberty Hilltoppers. The Yellow Jackets haven't defeated West Liberty since Sept. 28, 2012. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
