No. 18 WVSU trounces Frostburg State in foul-fest

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – No. 18 West Virginia State's women's basketball team took down the Frostburg State Bobcats inside the Walker Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon, 102-64. WVSU (16-3, 11-3 MEC) bounced back from Wednesday night's loss to Fairmont State in a big way, putting away the Bobcats (5-15, 3-11 MEC) by 38 points at the final horn.

Saturday's game was a chippy one, with 56 fouls called between the two teams, including five technical fouls and an intentional foul. As a consequence, the two teams combined for 56 attempted foul shots. Frostburg State hit a shade over 70 percent of their foul shots, while WVSU hit just shy of 80 percent. WVSU pounded the offensive glass, coming away with 22 offensive rebounds to Frostburg State's eight, allowing State to put up 29 more shots then the Bobcats.

Caroline Scott led the offensive charge for the Yellow Jackets, putting up 18 points and gathering three rebounds. ZZ Russell scored 16 to go with six assists. Shelby Harmeyer added 12 and Emyah Fortenberry scored 10. Harmeyer was tied for the top spot on the boards with Latifat Olitunji. They both collected seven rebounds.

Frostburg State's Emilee Weakley scored 18 points and had eight rebounds prior to her dismissal due to fouls in the fourth quarter. Weakley averages almost 24 points a game and is the second-most productive scorer in the country.

The first quarter was tight, featuring four lead changes and three ties. The teams tied at 2-2, 4-4, and 10-10. Both teams took the lead twice in the quarter with WVSU taking the lead for good at 13-10 with 5:58 to play in the first quarter thanks to a Shelby Harmeyer trey. State scored four straight later in the quarter to go up by seven, 21-14. State eventually took a 25-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Frostburg State scored the first four points of the second quarter to claw within a point of WVSU, but State's defense hounded the Bobcats, forcing them to shoot 2-for-11 from the field for the next six minnutes and the Yellow Jackets went on a 26-6 run to balloon the lead to 51-30. Frostburg State hit three more free throws before the end of the quarter to put the WVSU lead to 51-33 at the break.

State hit the first bucket of the second half, a layup from Emyah Fortenberry, but the two teams traded points until the clock showed 6:15. State then went on a 16-0 run that lasted over five-and-a-half minutes. The Bobcats turned the ball over seven times during the stretch and only managed to get three shots off, all mid-range jumpers. A little scuffle in the middle of the stretch led to an intentional foul and a technical foul against the Bobcats, and two technicals against the Yellow Jackets. The Bobcats broke the drought with 52 seconds to go, but the Yellow Jackets now held a 78-43 lead at the buzzer.

The fourth quarter was a foul-fest with 16 fouls called, including two more techs. WVSU's foul shooting was deadly accurate in the frame, hitting 9-of-10 free throws and giving State the 102-64 victory, the fifth time the Yellow Jackets have hit triple-digits this season.
