No. 18 WVSU’s nine-game winning streak snapped by Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – In the first game as a ranked team in school history, the No. 18 West Virginia State women's basketball team (15-3, 10-3 MEC) saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons (14-6, 9-3 MEC), 89-75. Several key Yellow Jackets got into foul trouble and had their minutes limited.

Emyah Fortenberry was limited to just 11 minutes on the floor and didn't hit a single field goal with all 10 of her points coming from the free throw line. WVSU's leading scorer Destiny Fields was held scoreless, the first time since the victory against West Liberty on Dec. 10, 2022.

Shelby Harmeyer led the Jackets with 15 points, but was 2-9 from long range to go with six rebounds. Hannah Shriver and ZZ Russell both had 13 points. Fortenberry had the aforementioned 10 points and added nine boards in her limited minutes.

WVSU led for most of the first quarter, with their biggest lead coming with just over two minutes to play in the frame, 19-12. Fairmont State ended the quarter on a 10-2 run to put State behind the eight-ball 22-21 at the end of the first. The Yellow Jackets were hampered by three separate offensive fouls called at inopportune times.

Hannah Shriver put the Jackets back up with three-and-a-half minutes to play in the half, 35-34, but Fairmont managed to tie it back up at the free throw line a couple of possessions later and then take the lead on a three-ball. Harmeyer hit a foul shot to close to within two but a late jumper behind the arc put the Falcons up by five at the halftime break. State shot better in the second quarter then they did in the first, hitting 41.2 percent of their shots compared to 26.9 percent, but still had trouble establishing the three-ball.

State tied the game back up at 46-all with just over eight minutes left, but Fairmont exploded for a 16-4 run during which State shot 1-of-9 from the field, including a field goal drought of 3:39 and then followed that up with another drought that lasted almost two minutes. State trailed by nine at the end of the third, 68-59.

State got as close as six points in the fourth, but spent most of the time down by eight or more and couldn't score a single point in the final two-and-a-half minutes of the game to seal their fate.
