Second quarter explosion against NDC gives State sixth straight victory

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – West Virginia State University's women's basketball team (12-2, 7-2 MEC) scored their sixth straight victory of the 2022-2023 campaign on Wednesday with a 93-69 victory over the Notre Dame College Falcons (4-12, 3-6 MEC). WVSU outrebounded the Falcons on the offensive glass, 28-10, and forced 25 of the Falcons' 35 turnovers.

Anysa Jordan led the offensive charge for the Yellow Jackets with 19 points. She nearly picked up her fourth double-double of the season with nine rebounds. ZZ Russell added 18 points to go with her five steals, well above her season average of 2.6 steals per game, three boards and three assists. Russell is now just one steal behind her teammate Caroline Scott for the top spot in the conference in steals.

Shelby Harmeyer and Destiny Fields each added 12 points. State held a +19 turnover margin over the Falcons, second highest this season.

Noel Weathers was the only Falcon to hit double figures with 16 points.

State started the game on a 6-0 run, then allowed NDC back when they rattled off seven straight points. State took the lead back with a Scott jumper, 8-7. The two teams then tied at 9-9 and 11-11. Russell hit a late jumper to take a 13-11 lead to the break.

NDC scored the first bucket of the second quarter and converted the and-one opportunity, taking a 14-13 lead with 9:45 to play in the first half. Harmeyer hit a three to terminate NDC's final lead of the game and kicking off a 24-5 run that saw six different Yellow Jackets put points on the board over the five minute span, ballooning the State lead to 37-19. NDC hit a trey and then watched seven consecutive Yellow Jacket points scored by Harmeyer, Fields, and Russell. State took a 49-28 lead into the halftime break.

The third quarter started with the teams trading baskets, but State went on a 7-0 run late in the quarter to add to their lead, 63-39. Imani Reid scored four points over the span. State and NDC traded blows over the final two minutes to freeze the lead at 24, 67-43 with 10 minutes to play. Both teams scored 26 points in the final frame to give the Jackets the victory.
