Women's Basketball wins big against Alderson Broaddus, 112-49

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State women's basketball team (13-2, 8-2 MEC) undoubtedly defeated Alderson Broaddus (4-11, 3-7 MEC) by a 63-point margin, 112-49, on Saturday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets led for all but the opening 11 seconds of the contest when the game was still scoreless. They extended their win streak to seven games with the victory.

West Virginia State broke the school record of steals in a game with 29 and was one point away from tying the Mountain East Conference record of largest lead at halftime with a 52-point advantage.

Senior forward Destiny Fields reached 1,000 career points in the game as she led all players with 27 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Classmate Imani Reid posted a season-high 18 points as the game's second-leading scorer. Alana Kramer and Anysa Jordan each scored 11 points while Jordan added 10 boards for her fourth double-double of the season.

The game was decided within the first five minutes. State went up 30-2 halfway through the first quarter. Alderson Broaddus was ill prepared for the constant press and turned the rock over ten times during the opening five minutes. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets shot 10-of-16 from the floor, 7-of-10 from the free throw line, and made three treys. WVSU was not as dominant in the latter half of the first period, but still ended up with a 39-8 lead going into the second quarter.

The Yellow Jackets were almost as dominant in the second quarter as they were in the first period. They outscored the Battlers 31-10 while shooting 46 percent from the field and making 5-of-9 three-pointers. Meanwhile, AB was forced to commit nine turnovers and held to 29 percent shooting. The halftime scoreline was incredulous with WVSU on top by 52 points, 70-18.

The Battlers saved themselves the embarrassment of having nearly every State school record broken against them by adapting to the constant press in the second half. Nevertheless, WVSU still won both the third and fourth quarters albeit by slimmer margins than in the first and second periods. West Virginia State edged Alderson Broaddus by five points, 23-18, in the third. The Yellow Jackets then won the fourth quarter by six points, 19-13, and scored 14 unanswered at one point on their way to eclipsing the century mark for the fourth time this season.

State grabbed 70 rebounds, dished out 26 assists, caused 45 turnovers, swiped 29 steals, scored 56 fastbreak points and added 57 points off turnovers to completely dominate the team that upset nationally-ranked Charleston earlier this week.

The Yellow Jackets will have a shot to make headlines against No. 2 Glenville State in their next game on Wednesday, Jan. 18th. They nearly got the best of the Pioneers when they faced them on the road early on in the season. The clash between the top two teams in the MEC standings will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. at the Walker Convocation Center.
