INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- The top two teams in the South Division of the Mountain East did battle Sunday night at Dickerson Stadium to decide the top team in the conference.Â
Both teams earned a point tonight, with WVSU going to 7-0-1, 5-0-1 in MEC play, and Concord moved to 5-2-1, 3-2-1 in the MEC.
Both teams scored their goals on set-pieces. Concord's Zoe Belding struck first off of a corner kick in the 25th minute, while the Yellow Jackets's Ingred Barbosa de Castro scored off of a free kick taken by
Fran Soares-Cupertino. After 45 minutes, the score was level at one-apiece. The two teams fired shot after shot towards goal with WVSU taking 10 shots through 45 minutes and Concord firing eight. The Mountain Lions were much more accurate though with five finding the target to WVSU's three. The possession stat was split 50-50 between the two teams.
Both teams pushed heavily in the second half, with the Yellow Jackets spending 59% of their possession time in the attacking half and Concord spending 54% in the attacking half. The two teams continued attacking each other's goal keeper, though WVSU had the advantage in shots, firing 14 towards goal and Concord only putting six shots towards net. Only three of Concord's shots found the target, while the Jackets put seven on target. Neither team could find the back of the net, although a couple of set-piece opportunities for the Jackets in the final five minutes of the match resulted in a Mountain Lions save and a shot by
Yasmin Evans that sailed through the football uprights. At the final whistle, neither team could pull ahead.
Soares-Cupertino never could find the net, snapping her seven-match scoring streak, however she did get an assist on the lone goal for State to extend her point streak to eight matches. She took eight shots, only finding the target once.
Esther Dhiramo took six shots, putting three on target. Barbosa de Castro nailed her lone shot of the match to account for the only Yellow Jackets goal.Â
Laura Galindo made seven saves tonight.
The two teams tied the mark for the most shots taken in one match with 38 shots between the two teams. The 16 combined saves is the most this season in a conference match.
