WVSU gets fourth shutout in rout of Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- WVSU women's soccer team used a five goal second half to remain undefeated on the season, taking down the Glenville State Pioneers on Wednesday, 6-0. The Yellow Jackets (7-0-1, 5-0-1 MEC) have never lost to the Pioneers (0-9, 0-7 MEC) and they haven't allowed a goal since March 5, 2021.

The match remained scoreless until the 43rd minute, when Fran Soares-Cupertino hit the top right corner of the net off of a free kick courtesy of a foul by Glenville State's Mackenzie Hendricks. The halftime whistle blew with the Yellow Jackets only leading 1-0.

WVSU exploded in the second half, scoring five goals in the final 45 minutes of the match, starting the onslaught in the 68th minute with a Sandra Linares goal. Three minutes later, Soares-Cupertino added a second goal to the scoreline. Three minutes elapsed before the Yellow jackets had a corner kick opportunity, with Brooklyn Pritt capitalizing and adding a fourth goal to the scoreboard with an assist from Paula Herold. It took 11 minutes for the Yellow Jackets to put another on the scoreboard, once again by Soares-Cupertino on a free kick off of a Glenville State foul, this time by Jordyn Dansby-Ross. Alba Closa wrapped up the scoring for the Yellow Jackets in the final minute of the match, again attacking the bottom right corner with an assist by Linares.

Soares-Cupertino scored her league-leading 13th goal on the season en route to a three goal match, Pritt scored her third of the season, Closa and Linares each scored their first goal of the season. The Yellow Jackets once again pelted the opposing's goalie, firing 24 shots at the Glenville State goal with 12 of them finding their target.

State continues their road trip and heads to the northern panhandle for a midday match against the Wheeling Cardinals on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm. The Cardinals are currently ranked second in the North Division of the MEC and currently sit 4-5, 4-3 in the conference.
