Yellow Jackets fall to No. 17 Notre Dame (Ohio), 48-13

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University football team (2-2, 1-2 MEC) was defeated by No. 17 Notre Dame College (3-1, 3-0 MEC) by a final score of 48-13 on Saturday afternoon at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium.

Sophomore kicker Brennen Schmitt converted both of his field goal attempts from 30 and 29 yards out. Graduate wideout Keedrick Cunningham caught six passes for 104 yards while fellow wideout Jeremy Dillon reeled in his second touchdown of the season. Sophomore linebacker Kameron Vargas recorded a team-high 11 tackles, including seven solo tackles and one tackle-for-loss. Classmate Jeremiah Covington-Griggs was not far behind with 10 total tackles, including three tackles-for-loss and a sack.

The Falcons scored on their first possession of the game with a 10-play, 62-yard drive that resulted in a 20-yard goal, 3-0. The WVSU defense shut them out of the end zone after a goal-to-go situation. NDC then completed an 80-yard pass for a touchdown on its next offensive possession. West Virginia State trailed 10-0 at the end of the first after not being able to string together a scoring drive.

Notre Dame started the second quarter on State's one yard line thanks in large part to a 30-yard pass completion. The Falcons punched the ball over the plane with a QB sneak to increase the deficit, 17-0.The Yellow Jackets scored on the next drive after marching 61 yards down the field. They set up a 30-yard field goal attempt for Schmitt which flew through the uprights, 17-3. Schmitt then added a 29-yard field goal after a 48-yard drive that ended around the three-minute mark, 17-6. 

A 44-yard pass completion by the Falcons on their final possession of the first half helped them add to their lead before the break. Notre Dame's quarterback broke the plane again with a two-yard scramble, 24-6.

NDC added another touchdown towards the beginning of the second half when Schmitt fumbled the snap in the end zone on a punt attempt. The Falcons recovered to widen the gap to 31-6. WVSU finally found the end zone on the ensuing drive. Quarterback Donovan Riddick connected with four different receivers for some nice chunk plays. Riddick finished off the drive by lobbing a 5-yard pass up to Dillon on a fade route, 31-13.

Notre Dame scored one more touchdown in the third quarter, 38-13, and another in the fourth quarter, 45-13. The Falcons then tacked on a field goal in the final stanza to give the contest its final score.

West Virginia State picked up a respectable 384 yards of total offense in the game, but were outdone by NDC with 471 yards on the day.

The Yellow Jackets will hit the road for their next game at Alderson Broaddus on Saturday, Oct. 1st. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
