State runs all over AB on Saturday night, 30-3

PHILLIPI, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University football team (3-2, 2-2 MEC) knocked off Alderson Broaddus (0-5, 0-4 MEC) by a final score of 30-3 on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets got off to a slow start in the first half, but picked up steam in the second half to end up with a convincing victory.

Sophomore running back Joel Felder was undoubtedly the player of the game. He returned to action this week and put on an inspired performance with a career-high 161 rushing yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns. Felder averaged 9.5 yards per rush and broke off a career-long 67 yard run for one of his two scores.

The State secondary made three interceptions in the contest. Senior Christian Thompson, junior Nicholas Fannin, and graduate student Jeffery Parker each had one pick. Additionally, Thompson and Fannin both made five tackles while Parker made four.

The first quarter was filled with turnovers. State intercepted Alderson Broaddus on the first play of the game. Then, Donovan Riddick was intercepted by AB after taking a shot at the end zone from the Battlers' 15 yard line. After WVSU forced a three-and-out, Joel Felder broke off a 27-yard rush to get the Yellow Jackets back into the red zone. They made it all the way to the two yard line only to lose a fumble on third down.

Another three-and-out was forced by the WVSU defense to hand possession back to the offense. State put together an 11-play drive that stalled short of midfield and brought the scoreless first stanza to a close.

Alderson Broaddus started the second quarter at its own eight yard line and had to punt from the 12 after yet another three-and-out. The snap went over the head of the punter and rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety, 2-0. The Yellow Jackets went three-and-out on the ensuing drive and set up AB for a scoring drive.

The Battlers completed a 48-yard pass on third-and-seven to break into WVSU territory. They made it down to the 12 yard line but were held there after Juston David broke up a pass on third down. The following 30-yard field goal attempt was good, 3-2.

Possession was traded until State ended up with the pigskin at its own 39 yard line. Four plays later, Riddick found Quientin Williams on a streak route for a 44-yard touchdown strike to put WVSU back in front, 9-3, with six minutes left in the first half.

Both teams were unable to string together a successful drive for the remainder of the second stanza and each side threw picks in the final minute. The score stayed at 9-3 in favor of the Yellow Jackets going into the break.

The third quarter was slow going until Felder bounced a run outside the left tackle and turned upfield for a 67-yard score. After the point after try was converted, WVSU gained a 16-3 lead with 8:36 remaining.

Alderson Broaddus threatened on the next drive by marching down to State's 11 yard line. The Battlers made the decision to go for it on fourth down and were mistaken when CJ Lipford broke up the intended pass. When the Yellow Jackets took back over, Felder capped a nine-play, 89-yard drive with a 23-yard run to the house, 23-3. AB brought the third stanza to a close with a drive that would eventually end with an interception around the 12-minute mark in the fourth.

WVSU took six minutes off the clock with a 12-play, 80-yard drive on the ensuing possession. Tavis McAdoo winded up breaking the plane from one yard out to increase State's advantage to 27 points, 30-3. After the Yellow Jacket defense came up with its final stop of the contest, State was able to run out the clock and get back in the win column.

West Virginia State ran for a season-high 327 yards in the contest while Alderson Broaddus was held to just 57 yards on the ground. The passing game was more even with WVSU picking 165 yards through the air to AB's 140 yards. The Yellow Jackets won in spite of turning the ball over four times with two picks and two lost fumbles.

State will celebrate Homecoming next week as West Virginia Wesleyan comes to Institute on Saturday, Oct. 8th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
