Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Bryan Shepherd, Assistant Sports Information Director

Women's soccer wins Kanawha River Derby to go 7-0

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The biggest crowd of the season came out and rocked the stands of Dickerson Stadium and the Yellow Jacket faithful were treated to another Kanawha River Derby victory, 2-1, the first for the Yellow Jackets on home turf. The victory keeps the Yellow Jackets undefeated and atop the MEC South Division, while the loss drops the Golden Eagles under .500 overall at 3-4, but keeps them over the mark in conference play at 3-2.

It's the seventh straight victory for the Yellow Jackets who were ranked fourth in this week's United Coaches Atlantic Regional Poll. State also picked up a few votes for the national Top 25.

The first real chance of the game came in the 16th minute. Esther Dhirmo set up a corner kick opportunity for State when she broke free and had her shot deflected out of touch. Billie Jean Davies' header off the corner required a diving save from Charleston's keeper before Brooklyn Pritt unsuccessfully tried to score off the rebound.

The Golden Eagles were awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute after a collision between a charging forward, a WVSU defender and Laura Galindo in the six-yard box. UC's Madison Hansen converted the penalty with a low shot into the left side of the netting, 1-0.

Fran Soares-Cupertino made a well-placed pass to Montserrat Alsina in the 36th minute to create a one-on-one opportunity with the opposing goalie. The keeper came off her line and made a sliding tackle to squash the chance.

Dhiramo was fouled harshly just outside the 18-yard box in the 41st minute. The ensuing free kick was taken by Paula Herold. The curling shot was swatted away by the keeper to Dhiramo whose shot was also pushed away but that allowed Pritt to gather up the rebound and kick the ball into the back of the net, 1-1. The score remained tied through the halftime whistle.

The first good chance of the second half came In the 58th minute. After a State corner kick was cleared half-heartedly, Farrelly fired off a long-distance shot that required a diving save. Then in the 61st minute, Maria Amaral nearly slotted one home from close range only for the ball to get trapped between the goalkeeper's legs.

Again, the soccer gods made Charleston answer for an unfair challenge against Dhiramo after she flew by a UC defender. Soares-Cupertino lined up the resulting free kick from nearly 30-yards out. The keeper did not stand a chance against her perfectly-placed shot that curled into the left side of goal, 2-1.

The Yellow Jackets saw the game through to its conclusion in the final 20 minutes. WVSU defended well while continuing to threaten in the final third to hold on to its one-goal lead and take back bragging rights in the Kanawha River Derby.

Soares-Cupertino hit her 10th goal of the season tonight, taking five shots and putting two on target. Pritt took three shots, all on target and scored her fifth of the season. Dhiramo fired five shots, put two on target, but none got past the UC netminder. She was cut down twice on breakaways, costing UC a couple of cards and setting up both of the Yellow Jackets's scores. Dhiramo did get an assist on the Pritt goal.
Both goalies were peppered in goal tonight, with State taking 18 shots and UC taking 14. Ten of State's shots and six of UC's found the target. The chippy game saw 12 fouls by the Jackets and 11 by UC, to go with three WVSU cautions and UC's two.

The gauntlet doesn't let up for the Yellow Jackets as they welcome the Concord Mountain Lions to Dickerson Stadium on Sunday for a 6:00 pm kickoff. WVSU defeated then No. 6 Concord in Beckley back on Sept. 6th, 2-1. Live stats and streaming will be available for the match.
