No. 49 WVSU edges Slippery Rock, 4-3

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- No. 49 West Virginia State University women's tennis earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Slippery Rock at Schoenbaum Tennis Courts on Saturday. The important win over an in-region opponent gives the Yellow Jackets a 6-4 overall record going into the bulk of the Mountain East Conference schedule.

Seniors Gaya Solomon and Chante Malo led West Virginia State to another team victory by winning at No. 1 doubles as well as at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Juniors Maya Haidari and Emily Moore clinched the doubles point for WVSU by crucially winning their match, 6-3.

Solomon made quick work of Slippery Rock's best player and definitively won her match in two sets. Tuva Wallin needed three sets to finish off her opponent. She claimed the first set, 6-2, before dropping the second, 4-6. Wallin was most dominant in the decisive third set which she ran away with, 6-1.

With the match tied at 3-3, the outcome of the No. 3 singles pairing ended up deciding it all. Malo lost the first set, 3-6, and needed to win the second set to keep her team in the running. She cruised to a 6-1 decision in the second set to force a third. The third set went to a tiebreaker in which Malo came out on top to ensure her team walked away winners.
