Softball gets swept at home and on the season by UC

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The WVSU softball team honored seniors Paige Scruggs, Emily Moore, and Emilee Walker prior to the first game against cross-town rival University of Charleston. These three Yellow Jackets played their final home games at Lady Jackets Field Wednesday. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets couldn't come away with a win as the Yellow Jackets dropped two more and were swept on the season by the Golden Eagles.

POST GAME RECORDS
WVSU: 17-19, 14-10 MEC
UC: 24-16, 16-8 MEC

Game 1: UC 13, WVSU 1, Final/5

Charleston's Danielle Bauer was dominant in the circle while the Golden Eagles racked up runs to create a lopsided scoreline in the first game. Bauer held the Yellow Jackets to four hits, none of which went for extra bases, and one run.

UC got on the scoreboard with a double and a single through the right side in the first inning, 1-0. Charleston then posted five-run half innings in the second and fourth to put the game out of reach, 11-0.

Autumn Thompson drove in Emma Ruth with a single in the bottom of the fourth to score West Virginia State's lone run, 11-1. The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the top of the fifth, 13-1, and a scoreless bottom of the fifth caused the eight-run rule to be enacted.

Game 2: UC 2, WVSU 0, Final

UC gained the early advantage with a run scored in the top of the first, 1-0. A ground-rule double in the first at bat was followed later by a single up the middle to plate the first run.

Charleston tacked on another run in the top of the fifth, 2-0, with a leadoff solo homerun. The Yellow Jackets reached base once during the remainder of the contest.

Autumn Thompson had a solid outing in the circle despite the lack of run support. She lasted seven innings while allowing eight hits and striking out three opposing batters.
