WVSU stumbles twice at D&E; faces tough test at WVWC

ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University softball team dropped two games on the road to Davis & Elkins on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets were defeated, 7-3, in the first game of the twinbill before suffering a 13-3 defeat in the second game.

WVSU slips to 17-21 overall and 14-12 in the Mountain East Conference following the pair of losses. Meanwhile, D&E leaps to 21-22 on the season and 17-7 in the MEC after the pair of wins.

The Senators were quick to grab the lead in the first game. In the bottom of the first, they scored on an RBI-single and a three-run homerun to go up by four, 4-0. They added one more run in the third inning with another RBI-single and tacked on two more runs in the sixth with yet another RBI-single and an error made by WVSU, 7-0.

The Yellow Jackets did rally in the top of the seventh, but the late effort was not quite enough. With two outs, Tori Lambert pinch hit and doubled to score Emma Ruth from second base, 7-1. Addi Dillow then pinch hit and doubled to score Layla Mendoza from third plus Lambert, 7-3. The rally and the first contest of the afternoon ended shortly thereafter.

The second contest of the afternoon slipped away early from the Yellow Jackets. State gave up 10 runs after getting a quick two outs in the bottom of the first, 10-0. Emma Ruth drove in a run in the top of the second to get one back, 10-1. The Senators then tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second to widen the gap, 13-1.

Ruth drove in another run in the top of the third and Layla Mendoza was able to come across the plate when Autumn Thompson put the ball in play in the top of the fourth, 13-3. No runs were scored by WVSU in the top of the fifth to enact the eight-run rule.

West Virginia State will look to reverse its fortunes today at 1 p.m. versus South Division and Mountain East Conference leaders West Virginia Wesleyan. WVSU is on a four-game slide while WVWC is coming off a split with Charleston. The Yellow Jackets currently sit at fourth place in the MEC South Division standings which is good enough to make the MEC Tournament. Glenville State trails closely in fifth place with an 11-14 mark in league play.
