WVSU splits with the Bobcats in MEC South finale

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — WVSU's softball team took to battle against West Virginia Wesleyan in the regular season divisional finale Sunday looking to snap a four-game losing streak. While the Jackets extended that streak to five games, State snapped it in the final game against the Bobcats, falling 4-0 in game one before winning 3-1 in the finale.

POST-GAME RECORDS

WVSU: 18-22, 15-13 MEC

WVWC: 27-12-1, 17-5 MEC

GAME 1: WVSU 0, WVWC 4

WVWC scored in the bottom of the first on a sac fly to center field. State got runners aboard on two singles and a walk with two outs, but Emma Ruth struck out to leave them stranded.

The Bobcats plated one in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth. The Jackets went down in order in the top of the seventh, dropping their fifth consecutive game.

Hannah Wilson, Autumn Thompson, Paige Scruggs, and Tori Lambert all had one hit for WVSU. Emilee Walker fanned six in her six innings of work.

GAME 2: WVSU 3, WVWC 1

Hannah Wilson got a leadoff single in the top of the first, then stole second base. Autumn Thompson fired a double into center field, scoring Wilson. Thompson moved to third on a Paige Scruggs groundout then scored on an RBI groundout by Tori Lambert.

The next three innings resulted in just two hits for the Yellow Jackets, going down in order in the third and fourth innings. The Bobcats didn't fare much better with a hit and two errors in the second, third, and fourth innings.

WVWC eventually cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, trimming the lead to one run. The Bobcats had the bases juiced with two outs, but the next batter grounded out to Emma Ruth to leave them loaded.

Ruth then singled in Paige Scruggs to give State the two-run lead once again.

Megan Shoemaker replaced Murphy after the leadoff batter singled in the bottom of the seventh. Shoemaker induced a double play to erase the single then a pop up to secure the two-run victory.

State heads up I-79 for their final two double headers of the regular season next weekend, meeting up with Fairmont State Saturday, followed by Frostburg State on Sunday. Live stats and streaming will be available to both sets of games.
