Emily Moore and Maya Haidari won at No. 2 doubles, but the other two matches were won by the Golden Eagles to give them the first point, 1-0. WVSU was left with the tall order of winning 4-of-6 singles matches to claim the victory.

Haidari picked up the first point for State with a 5-0 result that ended with Charleston's Balakrishnan retiring early. Chante Malo picked up the next point for the Yellow Jackets at No. 3 singles and was quickly followed by Tuva Wallin winning her match at No. 2 singles. Both Malo and Wallin only needed two sets to dust off their opponents. With three points in the bag for WVSU, one more Yellow Jacket needed to win in singles play to pull off the upset.

The critical match proved to be the No. 5 singles pairing of freshman Julieta Beltramino and UC's Meggan William. Beltramino won the first set convicingly, 6-2. The second set was a real battle, however, and went into a tiebreak. Beltramino persevered in the tiebreak and came out on top, 7-6 (4). Her gritty win at No. 5 singles ended up securing the team victory for the Yellow Jackets.

West Virginia State will head back to Huntington for a match against Marshall on Saturday, April 16 next. The start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
