West Virginia State outslugs Davis & Elkins in second game to split series

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University softball team split with Davis & Elkins at Lady Jackets Field on Monday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets were edged, 2-1, in the first game of the twinbill before triumphing, 9-4, in the second game.

West Virginia State moves to 16-4 on the season and 13-5 in the Mountain East Conference standings following the games' results. Meanwhile, the Senators come out with a 14-19 overall record and 10-4 MEC record after the conclusion of the second game.

The first game was a pitcher's duel between aces Kasey Murphy of WVSU and Jenna Evans of D&E. Murphy was in control throughout her seven innings pitched despite giving up nine hits. Only one of her runs conceded was earned. Evans only allowed three hits, none of which went for extra bases, in her seven innings in the circle.

Zeros graced the scoreboard until the top of the fourth when the Senators struck first. With runners moving to second and third on a passed ball, a single up the middle broke the deadlock, 1-0.

State tied the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the fifth. Lindsey Phares singled through the left side of the infield to reach base. She was then moved over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Hannah WIlson then put the ball in play on a hit-and-run to score Phares all the way from second base.

Davis & Elkins found one more run in the top of the seventh. After moving a baserunner to second with a sac bunt, a single through the left side scored the game-winning run, 2-1.

The second game was a slugfest with the Yellow Jackets coming out on top, 9-4. The Senators put the pressure on early by plating two runs in the first inning. An RBI-double was followed by a dropped fly ball that allowed another run to score, 2-0.

West Virginia State's bats finally woke up in the third inning. Autumn Thompson started the parade with an RBI-single up the middle, 2-1. Kasey Murphy then tripled down the right field line to score Thompson and tie it, 2-2. Abby Loyd's bunt single then scored Murphy from third and gave WVSU the lead, 3-2.

The Yellow Jackets tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning. Hannah WIlson bunted a run home before a fielding error allowed another run to come across, 5-2. The third run of the half inning was walked home to give State a commanding four-run advantage, 6-2.

D&E responded immediately with two runs in the top of the fifth. A double with two runners on cleared the bases to cut the lead to two, 6-4.

Autumn Thompson remained in the circle despite the dwindling lead and did not allow another run to score for the remainder of the contest. The Yellow Jackets added another three runs to their tally in the sixth inning to widen the gap. Thompson, Murphy, Loyd, and Scruggs all doubled one after the other to give the game its final score, 9-4.

WVSU will head to Notre Dame College next on Friday, April 15th for another MEC clash. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
