Softball drops a doubleheader to NDC Falcons

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — West Virginia State's softball team dropped two to the Mountain East North Division's third place team Friday, dropping a 5-1 decision before falling in a 6-4 see-saw battle to Notre Dame College.

POST-GAME RECORDS

WVSU: 16-16, 13-7 MEC

NDC: 14-20, 7-11 MEC

Game 1: NDC 5, WVSU 1

Notre Dame scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first to gain the early advantage, 1-0. After a scoreless second inning, Kasey Murphy tied it up with one swing of the bat in the top of the third. She sent a rocket over the center field fence to level the scoreline, 1-1.

The Falcons tacked on two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Two singles, coupled with an error, allowed the two runs to come across in the fourth, 3-1. In the fifth, a double with two runners on and two outs cleared the bases, 5-1.

Emily Moore replaced Murphy after the base-clearing double and only gave up one hit in 1.1 innings pitched. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets left two on base in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Game 2: NDC 6, WVSU 4

WVSU took the early lead in the third when Megan Shoemaker fired one to left center, scoring Murphy and Autumn Thompson. Lindsey Phares went opposite field and scored Emma Ruth later in the inning.

NDC got three straight hits to shave the lead to one in the bottom of the fourth, then doubled again to tie it up and chase Thompson, replaced by Shoemaker. NDC scored once more before the third out was recorded. Paige Scruggs tied it up in the top of the fifth with a sac bunt, scoring Emma Ruth.

A two-run shot for NDC in the bottom of the sixth closed the scoring.

WVSU got the first two batters aboard in the top of the seventh, then three straight outs, quashed the comeback attempt.

WVSU heads to Alderson-Broaddus Saturday for another MEC non-divisional matchup. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2:00 pm. Live stats and live video will be available.
