Softball splits at GSC Invitational

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — The Yellow Jacket softball team won two games and dropped two games in the Glenville State College Invitational that was played at the Sue Morris Sports Complex over the weekend.

Post-game Records:

WVSU: 3-6
Shepherd: 2-2
West Chester: 4-4
Seton Hill: 3-0

Game 1 - WVSU 7, Shepherd 6

The Rams struck first plating 4 runs in the top of the third inning. The Yellow Jackets answered with an Autumn Thompson single that scored Emily Moore in the bottom of the same inning. The two teams traded runs in the fourth inning and Shepherd added a sixth run in the fifth. The Yellow Jackets clawed back in the bottom of the seventh inning with a Moore triple that scored Kerigan Moore and Paige Scruggs to bring the Jackets within one. Autumn Thompson jacked one to center field to tie it and Lindsey Phares walked off on the very next at-bat. Moore picked up the win in relief of Kasey Murphy.

Game 2 - WVSU 8, West Chester 9

West Chester plated a run in the bottom of the first, then the Jackets scored six unanswered in the third and fourth innings, starting with a Thompson home run in the top of the third. Murphy drove in Emma Ruth to cap the scoring in the third. The Jackets then ripped off three singles by Phares, Emily Moore, and Tori Lambert and Murphy added a double to put the Jackets up 6-1 after four innings. West Chester answered in the bottom of the fifth to close the lead to 6-5. An RBI single by Addi Dilllow plated Scruggs for a 7-5 lead in the top of the sixth. West Chester again answered, tying it at 7-all after six innings. Neither team scored in the seventh inning. WVSU's Kerigan Moore singled in Hannah Wilson to go up 8-7, but West Chester plated two in the bottom of the eighth to walk-off.

Game 3 - WVSU 9, Shippensburg 6

WVSU again fell behind immediately with the Raiders scoring in the bottom of the first. Kasey Murphy drove in Scruggs in the top of the second and Layla Mendoza drove Murphy in to take a 2-1 lead. The Raiders plated four in the bottom of the same inning, including a lead-off jack. Emily Moore then sent one out of the ball park in the top of the fifth inning to bring Phares home and bring the Yellow Jackets within one. The Jackets exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth with Ruth and Emily Moore both driving two runs in and Autumn Thompson hitting one run home. Shippensburg went down in order in the sixth inning and had a runner that reached on a Yellow Jacket error erased on a double play in the seventh to quash any threat of a comeback. Kasey Murphy got the win in relief of Emily Moore.

Game 4 - WVSU 2, Seton Hill 7

The Seton Hill Griffins plated six unanswered runs in the first three innings of the game to put the Yellow Jackets in a hole they couldn't recover from. Mendoza sent one over the left field fence in the third inning and Kasey Murphy drove in Ruth in the fourth, but that was all WVSU could do offensively against Seton Hill pitching that struck out 10 Yellow Jacket hitters. Kasey Murphy reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the next three Yellow Jacket batters all got sent back to the dugout on strikeouts to end the game.
