WVSU off to a perfect start with two wins in the Atlantic Region Tip-Off Challenge

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team (2-0) defeated Livingstone, 90-60, on Saturday before coming out on top against West Chester, 107-102, on Sunday in the Atlantic Region Tip-Off Challenge at the Walker Convocation Center.

Game 1: West Virginia State vs. Livingstone

The Yellow Jackets pieced together two strong quarters in the first half by scoring 25 points in each. Meanwhile, Livingstone was frustrated by State's pace of play in the opening half and only managed to score 27 points. WVSU went into halftime with a commanding 23-point lead, 50-27.

The third quarter was played to a 19-all split before conditioning became a factor in the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Blue Bears, 21-14, in the final quarter to come away with a convincing 30-point victory, 90-60.

Three Yellow Jackets scored in double-digits including veteran point guard Hannah Shriver and senior transfers Anysa Jordan and Imani Reid. Shriver led all players in the game with 18 points while Jordan and Reid each posted 15 points.

Forward Emyah Fortenberry grabbed a game-high 13 boards while making five blocks.

State scored 38 points off turnovers, 31 second chance points, 40 points in the paint and held the lead for the last three quarters of the contest.

Game 2: West Virginia State vs. West Chester

While the second game of the weekend was much closer than the first, State never gave up the lead to West Chester. The Yellow Jackets gained a 23-18 advantage in the first quarter and then outscored the Rams by two points, 29-27, in the second period to go into the break up by seven, 52-45.

WVSU outscored WCU once again in the third quarter to gain a 13-point cushion, 79-66, going into the final stanza. State then did just enough to keep West Chester at bay in the fourth quarter and walk away with a 107-102 win.

Six Yellow Jackets scored in double-figures, including senior guard Shelby Harmeyer who led WVSU with 27 points and added 10 boards for a double-double. Meanwhile, Fortenberry once again led all players in rebounding with 14 in the contest.

State made 16 shots from behind the arc compared to six made by the Rams. The Yellow Jackets also registered 37 points off turnovers, 33 fast break points and 26 second chance points to overwhelm West Chester.
