Yellow Jackets edged at end by Glenville, 75-70

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team ( 2-1, 0-1 MEC) was edged, 75-70, by No. 2 Glenville State (3-0, 1-0 MEC) on Saturday afternoon at the Waco Center. The Yellow Jackets kept up with the defending National Champions until the bitter end.

Senior guard Shelby Harmeyer registered her second double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Fellow senior Anysa Jordan also led WVSU in scoring with 15 points while adding eight boards to her season totals. Junior guard ZZ Russell was the only other Yellow Jacket to score in double-figures with 12 points.

West Virginia State and Glenville State traded runs in the first quarter until the Pioneers ended up with a one-point lead, 21-20, at its conclusion. WVSU gained a four-point advantage, 9-5, in the opening four minutes before GSU seized a four-point edge, 15-11, just two minutes later.

The Yellow Jackets pulled back to within one point of the Pioneers in the last four minutes of the first period with a 9-6 run. Hannah Shriver made a driving layup in the final minute to close the gap to a single point.

In the second quarter, Glenville State started to pull away and nearly went ahead by double-digits, 42-33, with 1:18 remaining in the first half. Shelby Harmeyer knocked down a three shortly thereafter before both teams made trips to the free throw line in the last minute before halftime.

The Yellow Jackets converted 3-of-4 free throws while the Pioneers made 1-of-2 shots from the charity stripe to leave WVSU with a four-point deficit, 43-39, to overcome at halftime.

West Virginia State absolutely stifled Glenville State in the third quarter and held the Pioneers to single-digits in scoring. GSU only scored nine points in the third stanza which is almost unheard of in Glenville's high-scoring offense.

WVSU finished off the penultimate period on a 9-2 run that was capped by another three from Harmeyer. The Yellow Jackets subsequently went into the fourth quarter up by two, 54-52.

West Virginia State kept its momentum going in the final period of play and went up by five, 66-61, with four minutes to go. The lead did not last long as Glenville State proceeded to hit a jumper and make a shot from behind the arc within the next minute to tie the score at 66-apiece.

The score remained tight until Glenville's Hya Haywood connected on a three-pointer to put GSU up by four, 74-70, with 25 ticks left on the game clock. A turnover by WVSU in the closing seconds forced the Yellow Jackets to foul and send the Pioneers to the free throw line one last time. One free throw was sunk to give the game its final score.
