Women's Basketball dominates Concord on way to 95-70 victory

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team (3-1, 1-1 MEC) cruised to a 95-70 victory over Concord (1-4, 0-2 MEC) on Tuesday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets hit over 50 percent of their shots from the floor, with 50 points in the paint, and made nearly 40 percent of their shots from behind the arc to win convincingly.

Senior guard Ashley Davis led WVSU in scoring with 15 points in 18 minutes on the court. She shot 3-for-3 from three-point range. Junior guards Caroline Scott and ZZ Russell each scored 12 points as the other two Yellow Jackets to reach double-figures in scoring. Both players also swiped three steals apiece while Russell added a team-high five assists.

The first quarter was closely contested with four lead changes occurring in the opening 10 minutes of action. Concord's Maddie Ratcliff completed a three-point play to give the Mountain Lions their last lead of the first quarter, 14-13, with less than two minutes remaining. Shelby Harmeyer then made a driving layup around the one-minute mark to take the lead back, 15-14. A turnover by CU shortly thereafter resulted in Caroline Scott hitting a floating jumper to give WVSU a 17-14 advantage going into the second period.

State opened the second quarter on a 14-5 run that lasted nearly four minutes. Six different Yellow Jackets scored during the stretch to help WVSU to a 12-point cushion, 31-19. State maintained its sizable lead through halftime and was left with an 11-point advantage, 44-33, after the Mountain Lions made a single free throw with under 30 seconds left in the first half.

Concord hung with the Yellow Jackets in the opening five minutes of the second half, but State kept CU from cutting into the lead. Then, WVSU went on a 13-4 run that ended around the three-minute mark of the third quarter to create an 18-point differential, 65-47, between the two sides. The Mountain Lions finished the third period on a 9-3 run to leave a 12-point gap, 68-56, for State to defend in the fourth quarter.

The Yellow Jackets were the most dominant in the final 10 minutes and outscored Concord, 27-14. They started the final period on a 13-5 run to go up by 20 points, 81-61, with 3:37 left to play. State then scored nine unanswered during a two-minute stretch towards the conclusion of the game to gain the largest lead of the contest, 93-68. In the last 30 seconds, each team traded a pair of free throws to produce the final score, 95-70.

West Virginia State will play a non-conference game next against Pitt-Johnstown on Monday, Nov. 28 inside the confines of the Walker Convocation Center. The tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
