State takes down Pitt-Johnstown on Monday night

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team (4-1, 1-1 MEC) defeated Pitt-Johnstown (3-2) by a final score of 86-77 on Monday night at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets held the lead for more than 33 minutes of the game.

Senior Destiny Fields posted a season-high 21 points to lead WVSU in scoring while grabbing five rebounds. She scored 17 points in the first half. Classmate Ashley Davis scored in double-digits for the second-straight game and third time this season with 13 points. Junior Caroline Scott swiped a game-high five steals and added two blocks to frustrate the Mountain Cats.

UPJ scored seven unanswered points in the opening three minutes to take an early lead before State roared back with eight unanswered over the next two minutes to go in front, 8-7. Davis and Imani Reid knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to kickstart the run.

The Yellow Jackets then scored nine points without a response from Pitt-Johnstown later in the first period to increase their advantage. They went up by 10 points, 20-10, with two minutes to go after the dominant stretch. Following a pair of jumpers made by UPJ and a pair of free throws converted by Hannah Shriver, WVSU went into the second quarter with an eight-point lead, 22-14.

Both teams struggled to score in an evenly-played second quarter. The Mountain Cats edged State, 17-16, after making a layup with less than 10 seconds until halftime. The Yellow Jackets still held a seven-point lead, 38-31, going into the break.

Pitt-Johnstown finally regained the lead with a 10-0 run in the second half of the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets were suddenly down by five points, 56-51, without the momentum in their favor. That soon changed with WVSU responding in a big way with a 14-0 run to flip the script.

State caused four turnovers during the two-minute stretch, made all six of its free throw attempts, and sank four two-point shots to keep the Mountain Cats at bay. After three free throws were made by UPJ in the last 30 seconds of the third period, the Yellow Jackets went into the final period up by six, 65-59.

WVSU kept rolling in the fourth quarter and seized its largest lead of the contest, 84-68, with approximately three minutes left to play. The 16-point lead came off the heels of a 13-2 WVSU run that ended with Davis hitting a trey. Pitt-Johnstown was able to close the gap somewhat in the remaining minutes, but State had already done enough to ensure another victory.

State forced 24 turnovers and scored 33 points off them to trouble the Mountain Cats.

The Yellow Jackets will resume league play with a road trip to Frostburg State on Wednesday, Nov. 30 next. The tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
