Yellow Jackets record 20th sweep of season at Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team (25-4, 12-3 MEC) registered its 20th sweep of the season at Davis & Elkins (14-13, 7-8 MEC) on Tuesday night. The Yellow Jackets won all three sets with relative ease (25-19, 25-17, 25-21).

Junior Alex Darby led the attack with a game-high 13 kills while classmate Peri Martin lobbed up a team-high 22 assists. Sophomore Ashlynne Davis led all players in the match with 18 digs.

West Virginia State was always in control of the first set. However, the Senators stayed on the heels of WVSU for the first half of the opening set and pulled back to within two points, 13-11, of the Yellow Jackets after back-to-back kills.

After that point, State scored eight unanswered on a dominant run that created a 10-point gap, 21-11, between the two sides. Six of the eight points were WVSU kills, one was a service ace and the other was a block.

Davis & Elkins then gained the momentum with an 8-2 run that closed the gap to four points, 23-19. A pair of State blocks halted D&E's momentum and brought set one to a close, 25-19.

The second set went back-and-forth in the early stages before the Yellow Jackets went on an 8-1 run to go up by seven, 21-14. Darby tallied three kills during the stretch to lead the charge. Not long after, an attack error by the Senators handed setpoint to WVSU, 25-17.

Even though the final score of the third set was the closest of the three, State was never truly in doubt of finishing off the sweep. An 11-3 WVSU run early on granted the Yellow Jackets a comfortable seven-point cushion, 14-7.

The Senators tried to chip away at that lead for the remainder of set three, but only came close when three straight points went their way at the end, 24-21. Jacklyn Simms then dusted off Davis & Elkins with an assertive kill for matchpoint.

West Virginia State hit much better than Davis & Elkins at a .230 rate compared to a .104 hitting percentage from the other side of the net.

The Yellow Jackets will wrap up the regular season on Friday, Nov. 4 at rivals Charleston (29-3, 14-1 MEC). The away match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
