State falls to UC in three sets; splits regular season series

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team (25-5, 12-4 MEC) fell to Charleston (30-3, 15-1 MEC) in three sets (25-15, 25-22, 25-18) on Friday night at the Wehrle Innovation Center. The Yellow Jackets split the regular season series with their rivals after beating the Golden Eagles, 3-2, earlier in the season.

Junior outside hitter Jacklyn Simms played well with a team-high 13 kills on a .346 hitting percentage. She also had two block assists and three digs in the match. Meanwhile, sophomore libero Ashlynne Davis put in a solid defensive effort with a team-leading 16 digs.

West Virginia State played Charleston close in the beginning of the first set. The Yellow Jackets fell behind the Golden Eagles from the start, but caught up twice at 9-all and 12-even.

After the score reached 12-apiece in set one, UC gained the momentum with six straight points. WVSU was unable to get back into it after that stretch. Charleston finished the first set with a 5-0 run to win by 10 points, 25-15.

The second set was much closer than the first. The Golden Eagles gradually inched out to a six-point lead, 16-10, before the Yellow Jackets came back.

A 5-1 run by State suddenly cut the deficit to two, 17-15. The next four points were traded before Jacklyn Simms came up with a kill to close the gap to a single point, 19-18.

Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets were unable to come any closer in set two and the Golden Eagles reached setpoint at 25-22.

The rivals traded 4-0 runs to start the third set. After a UC service error, the Golden Eagles picked up the next five points to pull out front, 13-9. The momentum continued to favor Charleston for the remainder of set three until matchpoint came at 25-18.

West Virginia State will play in the Mountain East Conference Tournament next as the No. 2 seed out of the South Division. The quarterfinals are set for Thursday, Nov. 10 with Charleston hosting each round of the tournament. Matchups and game times will be announced by the MEC at a later date.
