Volleyball exits MEC Tournament with defeat to West Liberty

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team (25-6, 12-4 MEC) was knocked out by West Liberty (21-11, 10-6 MEC) in the quarterfinals of the Mountain East Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Wehrle Innovation Center. The Yellow Jackets were edged by the Hilltoppers in set one (26-24) before dropping the next two (25-16, 25-13).

Junior middle hitter Diamond'Nique Young performed well in her postseason debut for WVSU with a team-high 10 kills to go along with two block assists. Meanwhile, sophomore libero Ashlynne Davis led all players in the match with 18 digs.

No more than three points separated the teams throughout the opening set. Young nearly led the Yellow Jackets to victory in the first set when she registered three-straight kills to give WVSU setpoint at 24-23. However, the next three points all went West Liberty's way to undo State's late charge.

The Hilltoppers gained the momentum early in the second set by going up 9-4 and forcing the Yellow Jackets to take their first timeout. The timeout proved ineffective as WLU increased its advantage to nine points, 13-4, before WVSU scored another point. State never fully recovered from losing the momentum early in set two and went on to drop it, 25-16.

West Liberty kept its momentum going in the third set and went up 11-4 before State used its first timeout. The momentum never shifted and the Yellow Jackets ended up dropping the final set of the match by a score of 25-13.

WVSU was undone by a -.025 hitting percentage in the contest. In comparison, WLU averaged a .196 hitting percentage through three sets.

West Virginia State will most likely miss out on the NCAA DII Championship following the defeat. The Yellow Jackets were ranked eighth in the Atlantic Region going into today's match.

WVSU still has a lot to be proud of this season. The Yellow Jackets finished in second place in the MEC South Division and racked up more than 20 wins for the fourth-straight year, excluding the shortened 2020 season. They also were the only team to defeat rivals Charleston in conference play with a 3-2 comeback victory.
