No. 22 Yellow Jackets advance to MEC tournament semis for the first time in program history

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – No. 22 West Virginia State shutout the fourth seed in the MEC South, 2-0, on the back of goals by Brooklyn Pritt and Yasmin Evans in front of a nice crowd at Dickerson Stadium. State advances past the quarterfinals of the MEC for the first time in program history.

WVSU barely outshot the Senators, 14-12. State put six shots on target, while the Senators hit the mark three times.

The first-team all-conference selections and honorees were recognized during the introductions of the starting lineups. Among them were offensive player of the year Fran Soares-Cupertino, first-team midfielder Pritt, and first-team attacker Esther Dhiramo.

Dhiramo took the first real chance of the game in the eighth minute when she slipped past the defensive line and pushed her shot wide left. The missed opportunity made no difference as the Yellow Jackets found the back of the net seven minutes later.

Alba Closa lined up for a corner kick and sent in a cross that curled towards goal. The opposing goalkeeper was indecisive about coming off her line as Evans came up to knock the ball past her, 1-0.

The game fizzled out for the remainder of the first half. The Senators had a few good chances towards the end of the first 45 minutes.

Laura Galindo kept Davis & Elkins off the scoreboard in the 44th minute by making a clutch save. The Yellow Jackets therefore kept their one-goal advantage at halftime.

Billie Jean Davies' incredible work rate paid off in the 53rd minute. She sprinted downfield from her wingback position to catch up with a ball. She then sent a cross into the 18-yard box that pulled the goalie off her line. After a bit of confusion between the keeper and D&E defenders, the ball slipped through to Pritt who slotted it into a wide open goal, 2-0.

West Virginia State did a superb job defending for the rest of the second half. Meanwhile, Davis & Elkins continued to send players forward to no avail.

WVSU did not completely park the bus after going up by two scores. Soares-Cupertino came close to scoring twice in the 63rd and 75th minute, but her shots were aimed directly at the goalkeeper.

The Yellow Jackets successfully saw the match through to its conclusion and were awarded with a two-nil victory at the final whistle.

West Virginia State will host Fairmont State on Friday, Nov. 4 in the semifinals of the MEC Tournament. The semifinal match will kickoff at 4 p.m. from Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium.
