INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- No. 22 West Virginia State's dream of a Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship came to an abrupt end on Friday with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the No. 2 seed from the North in Fairmont State. Fairmont State's Lesbia Alejandra Puerto Sorto scored with 13 seconds left in the match to send the Fighting Falcons to the MEC Final.
State had multiple open looks at goal, taking 20 shots over the 90 minute match, but only was able to put two of those shots on target and sent several through the football uprights on both ends of Lakin-Ray Field. State took nine shots from inside the penalty area. It was a very chippy game with 30 fouls called between the two teams. State was whistled from 18 of them while Fairmont State was called for 12 fouls.Â
Fairmont State was able to put four shots on target in the first half, requiring
Laura Galindo to make some acrobatic saves. State fired six shots toward goal, but four went wide left, and
Fran Soares-Cupertino pulled one high and had one blocked. Fairmont State was the more aggressive of the two teams and managed to win the possession battle, but at the halftime horn, the score remained tied at nil-nil.
The second half started much like the first half. State didn't get credit for their first shot on target until the 73rd minute. Galindo kept the Fighting Falcons off the scoreboard, making several impressive saves. With time winding down and the match seemingly headed to extra time, Fairmont State made a cross, Galindo made a save, but the rebound was gathered and put away to put Fairmont State up with 89:47 showing on the stadium clock. State tried to get everyone down to make an attempt but the horn blew 90 minutes and State was on the wrong end of a 1-0 result.
West Virginia State will await the NCAA selection committee's decision to determine if they will qualify for the NCAA Regional Tournament that will be held starting Nov. 10.
