Women's soccer shuts out Hilltoppers to take control of MEC

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's soccer team captured another victory in front of the home crowd at Dickerson Stadium on Wednesday, knocking off the West Liberty Hilltoppers, 1-0.

The Yellow Jackets took control of the Mountain East with the victory after Frostburg State fell to Concord on the road, freezing them at 24 points, while the Jackets picked up three more to bring their total to 25 points.

Esther Dhiramo came close to scoring twice in the first 20 minutes. In the 6th minute, Paula Herold's shot was blocked and ricocheted into the air. Dhiramo leaped in front of the goalkeeper and headed the ball just over the crossbar. She then took a shot in the 16th minute that pinged off the crossbar.

The Yellow Jackets continued to pepper the goal for the remainder of the first half. By the time the halftime whistle blew, State took 16 shots with seven of those shots being on target. Meanwhile, West Liberty did not get off a single shot in the first 45 minutes.

Dhiramo and Herold threatened the most in the opening half. Dhiramo took six shots with two on goal while Herold took four shots, mostly from distance, with three on target.

West Liberty came close to scoring in the opening minutes of the second half when Amelia Compston was one-on-one with Laura Galindo. Galindo saved the low shot from Compston with her feet.

The Hilltoppers almost caught WVSU off guard in the 53rd minute by firing off three shots within 60 seconds after a shotless first half. Two of those shots required saves while one missed high.

The attacking threat by West Liberty fizzled out after that. State took the next three shots before finally breaking the deadlock in the 68th minute. Billie Jean Davies sent in a cross that bounced off a defender and found the head of Fran Soares-Cupertino for her 15th goal of the season, 1-0.

Shots were traded by both sides for the remainder of the contest, but none of them really came close to finding the back of the net. The match became testy in the closing minutes, but the Yellow Jackets kept their composure to see it through to the end.

WVSU (10-0-1, 8-0-1 MEC) fired 22 shots at the West Liberty (4-5-1, 3-4-1 MEC) goalie with 10 of them finding the mark. West LIberty sent eight shots at Galindo with four of them finding their mark. Galindo made all four saves, crediting her for her third shutout of the season. The Yellow Jackets were called for 12 fouls to West Liberty's two.

West Virginia State hosts Alderson Broaddus on Sunday at Dickerson Stadium. Kick off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
