INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- WVSU scored two goals in a 1:13 span to knock off the bottom ranked Alderson Broaddus Battlers on Sunday at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium, 3-1. The Jackets fired a season-high 30 shots at AB netminder Olivia Kqira, who is has the most saves per game in all of D-II, but only 11 of those shots found the target, well below the 51.2% season average. Of the 19 that were off target, nine of them sailed through or dinked off of the football uprights.
WVSU stayed undefeated and advanced to 11-0-1, 9-0-1 in the Mountain East. Alderson Broaddus fell to 0-8-3, 0-8-2 in conference play.
The score stayed locked at nil-nil until the 34th minute.
Fran Soares-Cupertino took the ball down the right side of the penalty area off of a
Karem Rodrigues pass. Kquira made the save, but couldn't corral the rebound and Rodrigues sent a rocket hurling into the goal to tickle the twine and break the stalemate and collect her first goal of the season. Following two consecutive offside violations by the Yellow Jackets, Ab got a shot on goal that was saved by
Laura Galindo. The Yellow Jackets managed one more shot on goal before the halftime whistle, but Kquira made the save to keep it a manageable one goal match.
The Yellow Jackets started firing at the AB goal again coming out of intermission as
Yasmin Evans shot one through the uprights above the AB goal followed by a Soares-Cupertino shot on goal and a one-timer opportunity with a wide open net, but the shot was sent sky-ward and left the WVSU lead at one. Two minutes later, AB tied the match at 1-all.
It stayed tied until the 66th minute.
Juliana Campos Lima picked off an AB clear attempt, passed it to Rodrigues who sent it to a charging Soares-Cupertino. Soares-Cupertino made a move to force the defender past her, then made a sweet back heel pass to
Sandra Linares standing at the top of the penalty area and blew it past Kqira in the top right corner to put the Jackets back up by one. It was Linares's fourth of the season.
Just 73 seconds later, AB was whistled for a handball and Soares-Cupertino buried another free kick into the opposing goal to give the Jackets a two-goal cushion. AB went on the offensive, putting two more shots on goal but couldn't find the net, giving the Jackets win number 11 on the season.
Soares-Cupertino sent nine shots toward goal, but only two of them found the mark and one hit paydirt, and assisted on the other two goals for the Jackets. Soares-Cupertino's goal tonight was her 16th of the season which puts her in sole possession of most goals scored in the nation for Division II women's soccer. Linares fired seven shots at goal, three of which found the mark, scored once, committed one foul, and was cautioned for it. Rodrigues took four shots, two on target, and a goal.
Laura Galindo stared down 12 shots and made five out of six saves.
Second-leading scorer
Esther Dhiramo was forced to sit out of the match due to yellow card count after picking up her fifth caution of the season against West Liberty last Wednesday.
The Jackets will make the trek to South Euclid, Ohio for a midday, mid-week contest against the Notre Dame College Falcons out of the MEC North on Wednesday, Oct. 12. The match is scheduled for a 3:00 pm kick-off.
