INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- WVSU knocked off West Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 on Senior Night in the Walker Convocation Center. The Jackets improve to 24-4 on the season, 11-3 in the MEC. Welseyan falls to 7-21, 3-11 MEC.

Alex Darby picked up a double-double in the match, scoring double digits in kills (10) and digs (11).Â
Wesleyan tied the first set at 8-8 then on
Kiersten Eggleton's serve, rattled off seven straight points to take a 15-8 lead with a Wesleyan service error, two kills each from
Jacklyn Simms and
Natalie Beer, and two Bobcat attack errors. Wesleyan got as close as 21-14, but gave three of the final four points to State with two attack errors and a service error. An Eggleton slam also mixed in the final State run to cap off a .387 hitting percentage for State in the set. The Bobcats only hit .094 in the set.
State took a 14-8 lead in the second set with a couple of 4-0 runs, first with a Simms slam and an Eggleton ace, followed by two attack errors by the Bobcats. At 10-8 the Jackets went on another run with two Eggleton kills, a Darby kill and a ball handling error by the Bobcat setter. The Jackets and Bobcats traded points for the rest of the set and State took the second set 25-19. Neither team hit well in the set, the Bobcats were once again sub .100, while State hit .135.
State held an 18-9 lead in the third set with a kill by
Alyssa Codner. Wesleyan then went on a 5-0 run. A Bobcat error gave serve back to State with a 19-14 lead Welseyan then finished off the third going out on an 11-3 run to win 25-22. State hit .039 in the set compared to the Bobcats .125.
State went on a 6-1 run in the middle of the fourth set to take a 22-12 lead. Each team traded the next four points giving State match point at 24-14. Wesleyan rattled off five straight to close the gap to 24-19 before a
Natalie Beer slam ended Wesleyan's hopes of a comeback.
The two seniors, Brook Smith and
Chesla Crowder, were honored prior to first serve and were given a rambunctious ovation when they were subbed out in the fourth set to end their final match inside the Walker Convocation Center.
State travels to Elkins for the penultimate match of the regular season on Nov. 1. The Senators fell to the Yellow Jackets in straight sets in Institute on Sept. 27. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
