WVSU drops conference opener to Concord 4-1

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State University's women's soccer team fell in their Mountain East conference opener by a score of 4-1. Concord led at halftime by only a single goal, 1-0, but a multi-goal second half sealed the win for the Mountain Lions.

WVSU drops to 1-2 on the season, 0-1 in the Mountain East. Concord improves their undefeated record to 4-0, 2-0 in the MEC.

Fran Soares-Cupertino was the greatest offensive threat for the Yellow Jackets, tallying three shots with a goal. Paula Murcia had the lone assist. Freshman goalkeeper Laura Galindo faced eight shots and made four saves.

Concord got on the board first at the 27:50 mark of the first half on a cross from Concord's Yasmin Mosby to a waiting Leah Foster who buried it past Yellow Jackets goalkeeper Laura Galindo for her second goal of the season. The Yellow Jackets then mounted a furious attack over the next eight minutes, taking three shots. Two were blocked by Concord defenders and one was saved by Concord's goalkeeper, Leah Marsh. The final 15 minutes of the half were rough and chippy with nine fouls called against the two teams, but no additional shots recorded. The first half ended with the Mountain Lions clinging to a 1-0 lead.

The second half started with the Yellow Jackets taking the opening kickoff, but Concord took control of the ball and within 35 seconds mounted a counter attack that saw Concord's Mosby record her fourth goal of the season with a shot that hit the bottom left corner of the net to put the Mountain Lions up 2-0. The Yellow Jackets wouldn't go quietly as Murcia tackled the ball away from Concord's defense and found Soares-Cupertino who curled it over Marsh's head and just under the crossbar for her first goal of the season. Concord quickly extended the lead back to two as Michelle Brogden found the back of the net with her first goal of the season just under three minutes later. Foster tacked on her second of the game, and third of the season with just over nine minutes left to make it 4-1.

The Yellow Jackets were outshot in the second half 12-2 and 14-5 for the match. Both teams committed five fouls in the first half. Concord was called for three fouls in the second half, while the Yellow Jackets were called for two.

The Yellow Jackets return to Mountain East action on Sunday, September 19th for a 6 PM match in Glenville against the Pioneers.
