INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University softball team split a doubleheader with Fairmont State on Friday afternoon at Lady Jackets Field. The Yellow Jackets gave up their lead late in the first game and did not recover, 3-2, before they pulled away late in the second game and held on to win, 4-2.

Game 1: FAIR 3, WVSU 2, Final/7
- Junior Kasey Murphy (8-6) shutout the Falcons through six innings but gave up three runs in the top of the seventh to lose the lead.
- West Virginia State totaled seven hits as a team compared to six by Fairmont State.
- Fairmont State's relief pitcher, Caitlin Kassay, was unhittable in 2.1 innings from inside the circle.

Murphy stayed out of trouble until the top of the seventh when the bases were loaded following a leadoff double and a pair of singles. An RBI-single, a fielder's choice, and a sacrifice bunt gave the Falcons their first lead of the game, 3-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Kassay was brought in to pitch with the bases loaded and two outs. She racked up four strikeouts and allowed no baserunners in 2.1 innings to ensure that Fairmont State stayed in front when the lead was seized.
Game 2: WVSU 4, FAIR 2, Final/7
- Freshman Autumn Thompson (10-2) tossed a complete game in which she allowed just five hits and one earned run. She tallied four strikeouts in the contest.
- Junior Emma Ruth propelled the Yellow Jackets to victory by going 2-for-3 with a double and her sixth homerun of the season. She drove in three runs and scored once.
- Freshman Lindsey Phares went 2-for-3 with a double to increase her batting average to .360 on the season.

Fairmont State took the lead in the top of the fourth when a fielding error allowed a run to score, 2-1.
An error in the field by the Falcons in the bottom of the fifth allowed a run to score to tie it, 2-2. With two outs in the same half inning, Ruth hit a two-run jack over the left field fence to put West Virginia State up for good, 4-2.
