Yellow Jackets take two at Glenville State (10-0, 8-2)

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University softball team won both of its games at Glenville State on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets enacted the eight-run rule after five innings in the first game, 10-0, before winning big again in the second game, 8-2.

  • Junior Kasey Murphy threw five scoreless innings to pick up her fifth win of the season. She struck out a season-high seven batters while giving up seven hits and one walk. Murphy also went 2-for-3 from the batter's box with a homerun, two RBI, and a run scored.
  • Freshman Lindsey Phares went 2-for-3 with a double and her third homerun of the season. She drove in three runs with her two extra base hits and crossed home plate twice.
  • Junior Emma Ruth also went 2-for-3 with a double. She drove in one run and scored twice.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when the Yellow Jackets picked up three runs. Sarah Barrett got on base with a walk to start the inning. Ruth then doubled to left field with one out to move Barrett over to third base. Madison Rafuson hit a sacrifice fly to break the deadlock, 1-0. Phares homered with two outs to clear the bases, 3-0. West Virginia State then tacked on seven runs in top of the fifth. Three doubles scored two runs, 5-0, before the second out of the half inning. An RBI-single scored another run, 6-0. A double to center field by Phares drove in two more runs, 8-0. Murphy then hit a bomb to bring Phares home, 10-0. With two runners on base and one out in the bottom of the fifth, Murphy whiffed two batters to end the first game.

Game 2: WVSU 8, GSC 2, Final/7

  • Freshman Autumn Thompson improved to 5-1 in the circle this season with a complete game in which she allowed only four hits. She also went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored to help herself to the win.
  • Fifth-year player Madison Rafuson went 3-for-4 with a double in a designated hitter role to lead all players in hits.
  • Outfielders Paige Scruggs and Emele Clark also had multiple hits.​​​​​​​

Neither team was able to round the bases in the first four innings of the second game. With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Clark hit a two-RBI double into center field to open the scoring, 2-0. A wild pitch allowed another run to score before Scruggs drove in one run with a single into right field, 4-0. Thompson then hit a clutch two-RBI single with two outs to make it 6-0. The Pioneers got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, 6-1. Glenville State then cut the lead to four runs in the bottom of the sixth, 6-2. West Virginia State responded by adding on two insurance runs in the next half inning, 8-2. No threat was posed in the bottom of the seventh with only one runner reaching base by way of a walk.
