INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State Baseball improved its win streak to six games Sunday, sweeping the first of two doubleheaders with Mountain East Conference divisional foe West Virginia Wesleyan at Cal Bailey Field.
The Yellow Jackets were led by a dynamic complete game pitching performance from graduate student
Ethan Lauchart (5-0) in Game 1, winning 5-2, and broke out the bats for a 15-3 finale.
State improves to 21-7 overall and 18-4 in MEC action, while Wesleyan drops to 3-17 both overall and in the league.
Sophomore
Trey Junkins had an impressive day at the plate, going 5-for-7 overall, scoring twice and adding three RBI. Senior
Andrew Stone scored four times on the day with a triple, while seniors
Matthew Kline and
Andrew Massey each belted their first long balls of the season.
GAME 1: WVSU 5, WV WESLEYAN 2
The game was scoreless through three innings until Stone led off the fourth with a walk. Kline then took two pitches before blasting a homer to left center. Two batters later, Massey took his first pitch of the at bat and sent the ball sailing over the left field fence to give State a 3-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets added insurance in the fifth, as Junkins cranked a double to the left center wall to bring home graduate student
Matt Harrison, who singled earlier in the inning, and Stone, who reached via walk.
Lauchart carried a perfect game into the sixth, until a bang-bang infield single in the sixth broke the blank for the Bobcats. He finished with seven strikeouts and surrendered no walks.
GAME 2: WVSU 15, WV WESLEYAN 3
The 15-3 margin ties for the highest defeat for Wesleyan this season, also suffering a 15-3 loss to Charleston earlier this month.
The Yellow Jackets wasted no time in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. A triple from Stone scored his brother
Michael Stone and Harrison, who reached on a single and fielder's choice, respectively.
A leadoff double from designated hitter
Noah Cummings started the second, who scored on a wild pitch fourth ball to third baseman
Christopher Jordan to put State up 4-0.
Kline led off the third inning with a single he pushed to left field, and scored on a bases loaded groundout to Massey. A bobble at the plate from the Bobcats' catcher brought in their second run of the inning and sixth of the game via Junkins, who had singled up the middle. Another infield groundout, this time to
Michael Stone, brought in Cummings and put WVSU up 7-0 through three complete frames.
Wesleyan got on the board in the fifth via a double and single, and the Yellow Jackets then exploded for an eight-run, six-hit inning.
Jordan singled in Massey, who boarded on an error, and a bases-loaded walk to Stoney brought in little brother Michael and put State up 9-1. A Kline double down the left field line scored Jordan and Harrison, who also walked, and then a Junkins infield single plated Stone. Kline came home a few batters later on a sacrifice fly from junior catcher
Cole Kiddy, who pinch hit.
Junkins scored his second run of the day on a single to shallow left from shortstop
Brett Christian, and then yet another single through the left side from freshman
Ryan Kay allowed Cummings to plate State's ultimately final run.
Wesleyan added a run in each the sixth and seventh innings via a double, sac fly, and homer.
Graduate student
Jacob Bradley (4-2) earned the victory for WVSU, tossing two scoreless frames, scattering just one hit, did not allow a walk, and picked up three strikeouts. Senior
Daniel Brandon earned the unconventional three-inning save, tossing five innings of relief where he also did not allow a walk.
Jordan went 3-for-3 in Game 2 with two RBI and a run, while Kline drove in three on a 2-for-3 day with a pair of runs. Cummings scored three times during the contest.
