INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University baseball team concluded its second consecutive four-game sweep of a Mountain East Conference opponent with a pair of wins versus West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday afternoon at Calvin L. Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets did just enough to win the first game, 2-1, before they cruised to victory in the second game, 8-2.

Postgame Records
WVSU: 24-7, 21-4 MEC
WVWC: 3-20, 3-20 MEC

Game 1: WVSU 2, WVWC 1, Final/7
  • Sophomore Nick Loftis came in to pitch at the start of the second inning and did not surrender a hit until the sixth inning. He remained in the game until the end and finished with six strikeouts, no bases on balls, and two hits allowed.
  • Grad student Jared Hunt batted 1.000, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • First baseman Matt Harrison was pitched around, drawing four walks in four at bats. He managed to round the bases once.
Quick Recap

Three walks allowed by WVSU loaded the bases for West Virginia Wesleyan in the top of the first. Dane Peterson was brought in to get out of the jam. A sac fly scored one run before the third out came, 1-0.

Harrison and Andrew Stone both drew walks with two outs in the bottom of the first. Matthew Kline's single into left field brought Harrison home from second base, 1-1.

The Bobcats were held scoreless after Nick Loftis entered the game in the top of the second.

Hunt reached base with a single to right center in the bottom of the fourth. He advanced to second on a muffed throw by the second baseman and then made it to third on a wild pitch. Michael Stone singled up the middle to bring in Hunt for the ultimately game-winning run, 2-1.

Game 2: WVSU 8, WVWC 2, Final/7
  • Senior Matthew Kline had himself a game with two homeruns and a triple in four plate appearances. He drove in four runs while crossing home plate twice.
  • Sophomore Camron Lewis was credited with the first win of his collegiate career after allowing no baserunners in the first two innings.
  • Senior Clark Reese earned his second save of the season for five innings of relief in which he gave up only two hits and allowed one earned run.
Quick Recap

The Yellow Jackets started the scoring with two runs in the first inning, 2-0. A sacrifice fly by Andrew Stone and an RBI-triple from Kline were the culprits.

Michael Stone's sacrifice fly to deep right field in the second inning scored the third run for West Virginia State, 3-0.

West Virginia Wesleyan got one run back in the top of the third before WVSU promptly nullified it in the next half inning. Noah Cummings' RBI-single to right field returned the lead to three runs, 4-1.

The same scenario played out in the fifth inning with the Bobcats and the Yellow Jackets each picking up one run. Kline's first homer of the game sailed over the fence in left center to restore the lead to three runs again, 5-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Harrison ripped an RBI-single into left field to add an insurance run, 6-2. In case four runs were not enough, Kline launched his second bomb of the game over the left field fence with one runner on base, 8-2.

Reese retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to send West Virginia Wesleyan packing.
