INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team hosted Glenville State at the Shawnee Sports Complex on a chilly Friday night and came away with an emphatic 5-0 victory. The Yellow Jackets controlled the game from the first minute and gave almost nothing away to the Pioneers.
WVSU improves to 2-3-1 on the season with the win while GSC drops to 1-4 overall with the loss.
Cierra Savin scored twice while Brooklyn Pritt, Karem Rodrigues and Lainey Armistead each scored once. Juliana Campos Lima provided two assists. Paula Murcia also added an assist. Goalkeeper Christin Walls kept a clean sheet with two saves.
The Yellow Jackets claimed an early lead with a goal in the 2nd minute. Attacking midfielder Paula Murcia set up winger Brooklyn Pritt for a collected finish to put West Virginia State up 1-0.
While WVSU only scored the one goal in the first half, the Yellow Jackets were constantly on the attack. They kept the ball in their opponent's half throughout and fired off 11 shots. Defensively, West Virginia State held Glenville State to two shots in the first 45 minutes.
The floodgates opened for WVSU in the second half. Forward Cierra Savin started the second half scoring with her first goal of the match in the 53rd minute. Campos Lima provided the pass that allowed Savin to score.
Fullback Lainey Armistead made it 3-0 in the 67th minute with an unassisted goal that came off a corner kick sent in by winger Megan Maslak. Two minutes later, Savin scored her second goal to increase the lead to 4-0.
The exclamation point on the victory was an 89th minute finish by forward Karem Rodrigues after she received a long ball from Campos Lima.
West Virginia State barraged the opposing goalkeeper with 29 total shots and 19 shots on goal. In comparison, Glenville State managed only six total shots and two shots on target.
The Yellow Jackets travel to Concord on Friday, April 9th for their next match. The Mountain East Conference clash is scheduled for 5 p.m. start.
