ATHENS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team nearly pulled off an upset at division-leading Concord on Friday evening, but came up short in the end, 3-2. The Yellow Jackets shocked the Mountain Lions by going up by two goals early on. CU scored its third goal late in the second half to turn the tables.
West Virginia State falls to 2-4-1 in the Mountain East Conference with loss while Concord improves to 6-1 in the MEC with the win.
Senior
Megan Maslak had a goal and an assist in the match. Junior
Cierra Savin scored once while fellow junior
Naomi Waithira added an assist. Freshman
Christin Walls made a season-high nine saves with 18 shots faced.
The Yellow Jackets scored first with some impressive buildup play in the 21st minute. After
Lainey Armistead gained possession in her own half, she sent the ball downfield for
Naomi Waithira to collect. Waithira then linked up with
Megan Maslak on a run who proceeded to slot a shot into the left side of the netting, 1-0.
West Virginia State's second goal came five minutes later. Maslak lined up for a free kick on the far-right side of the field and sent in a perfectly placed ball to the far post.
Cierra Savin was in position for the set-piece play to work and headed the ball into the back of the net from close range, 2-0.
In the 28th minute, the Mountain Lions answered with their first goal. With a similar set-piece play to WVSU's second goal, they lined up for a free kick and scored with a header at the far post, 2-1.
Four minutes later, Concord drew level with the Yellow Jackets. A shot was taken from just outside the 18-yard box that arced over Walls' outstretched hands and barely fell under the crossbar, 2-2.
The score was still tied at 2-2 when the halftime whistle blew.
For the opening 25 minutes of the second half, West Virginia State maintained a stalemate with Concord. The stalemate finally came to an end with a 70th minute goal scored by CU.
Walls made a diving save to her left off a corner kick only to end up having to defend a second corner kick immediately afterwards. The successive corner kick resulted in a headed goal that gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good.
The Yellow Jackets will host rivals Charleston next for the regular season finale on Friday, April 16th. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
