Yellow Jackets split with Malone (Ohio) on Tuesday (6-4, 3-4)

MASON, Ohio -- The West Virginia State University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Malone (Ohio) at Prasco Park on Tuesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 6-4, before they were edged by the Pioneers in the second game, 4-3.

Game 1: WVSU 6, MU 4, Final/7
  • Left fielder Trey Junkins was the only Yellow Jacket with multiple hits. He went 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, and one run. First baseman Matt Harrison launched his second homerun of the season over the left field wall in the seventh.
  • Andrew Stone came in to pitch in the fifth. He gave up one hit and posted three Ks in two innings on the mound. Jacob Bradley was credited with his first save of the season for keeping Malone off the scoreboard in the seventh.

Junkins started the scoring with a two-RBI triple in the top of the first. He was able to score himself on a wild pitch, 3-0. Malone picked up three runs in the next half inning to even the score, 3-3. The Yellow Jackets tacked on two runs in the second to retake the lead, 5-3. Jared Hunt tripled to left center to score one run before he crossed home plate on a ground ball in the next at bat. The Pioneers scored on a balk in the bottom of the fourth, 5-4. Two were left on base after the dicey situation. Harrison hit a leadoff bomb over the left field fence in the top of the seventh to add an insurance run. The extra run proved unnecessary with Bradley being able to force a groundout with two outs and two on base to earn the save.

  • Three Yellow Jackets went 2-for-3 from the batter's box in the second game. Andrew Stone had a double and crossed home plate twice. Matt Harrison also had a double and knocked in one run. Antonio Brown drove in one run with three appearances at the plate.
  • Pitcher Ethan Lauchart was solid in three innings on the mound. He forced four groundouts and two flyouts while striking out two. He allowed only three hits.

A RBI-single into center field by Brown scored Andrew Stone from second in the top of the first, 1-0. Malone answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, 1-1. Brett Christian tripled with two outs in the top of the second and then scored on a wild pitch, 2-1. The Pioneers went up in the bottom of the second with a 2-RBI double into the left center gap, 3-2. Back-to-back doubles by Andrew Stone and Matt Harrison in the top of the third leveled the score, 3-3. Scoring from both teams ceased until the bottom of the sixth when a RBI-triple brought in the game-winning run for Malone, 4-3.
