WVSU records first official win in program history at Glenville State, 5-1

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team traveled to Glenville State on Friday night and came away with a resounding result, 5-1. Three historic markers for the WVSU women's soccer program were laid down in the match. The first official goal, the first official hat-trick, and the first official win were all accomplished in 90 minutes.

"The girls played so well tonight," said Head Coach Lisa Mann. "[They were] very composed in possession and we created so many chances. Defensively, I thought we were very strong, limiting Glenville to very few chances.

"I thought we could have been far more clinical in our finishing. That is an area we will have to improve on in future games. But overall the performance of the whole team was very good."

WVSU improves to 1-1 on the season with the win while GSC drops to 0-2 overall with the loss. The 5-1 victory helps offset the 5-0 defeat suffered by the Yellow Jackets in the season opener. West Virginia State's goal difference stands at -1 after the positive result.

Junior No. 10 Naomi Waithira was responsible for the first official hat-trick in program history. She scored three goals with five shots taken and added an assist. Sophomore full back Lainey Armistead registered the first official goal in school history when she scored in the 16th minute. She also had an assist. Senior forward Juliana Campos Lima also scored once while senior midfielder Brooklyn Pritt also made an assist.

West Virginia State pressed high up the pitch and maintained possession from the start. The Yellow Jackets put the opposing keeper to work early on and forced her to make five saves in the opening 16 minutes. In the 16th minute of the match, Lainey Armistead came streaking down the sideline from her left back position and was met with a through ball from attacking midfielder Naomi Waithira. Armistead coolly slotted the ball into the right side of the net with the keeper charging at her to register the first official goal scored in school history, 1-0.

The second goal came in the 24th minute off a corner kick from Brooklyn Pritt. Juliana Campos Lima slipped past the defense and fired off a shot directly at the goalie. The driven shot was mishandled by the goalkeeper until the ball inevitably crossed over the line between the sticks, 2-0.

Goal number three was the first of the night for Waithira. Megan Maslak lined up for a 21-yard free kick from the far-left side of the field in the 30th minute. The free kick was on target and obliged the keeper to push the shot away only for Waithira to get on the end of the deflection and slot another goal home, 3-0.

Waithira scored again in the 39th minute when she bounced a ball in between two Glenville State defenders then dribbled around the goalie to find a wide-open net, 4-0. By the end of the first half, West Virginia State had taken 20 shots and held the Pioneers to two.

The second half was played to a 1-1 draw. Glenville State only managed to get one shot off in the entire half and it resulted in a goal scored in the 57th minute, 4-1.

With the Pioneers sitting back, WVSU was not able to create quite as many opportunities as in the first half. However, Waithira still had a hat-trick in mind and was able to complete the feat in the 78th minute. A failed clearance by a GSC defender landed at her feet before she proceeded to deke around said defender and rip a shot into the top right corner of the goal to give the game its final scoreline.

West Virginia State finished with 32 total shots and 18 shots on goal. Meanwhile, Glenville State ended with just three total shots and two shots on target.

The Yellow Jackets will write the first chapter in their rivalry with Charleston on Friday, March 12th next. They will make the short strip to UC's campus on the other side of town for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
