Yellow Jackets upended by Charleston, 3-0

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State University women's soccer team was upended by Charleston, 3-0, in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) clash on Friday night. The Yellow Jackets went down 2-0 early on in the first half, but kept their composure despite the prompt setback.

WVSU drops to 1-2 on the season with the defeat while UC leaps to 3-0 overall with the win.

Senior midfielder Megan Maslak was West Virginia State's best attacking threat with four shots and two shots on goal.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the 10th minute, 1-0. Within five minutes of their first goal, they scored a second goal that left West Virginia State begging for an answer. The WVSU defense was shored up after going down 2-0 and only one more shot was allowed in the final 30 minutes of the first half. Maslak managed to get off a shot in the 43rd minute that sailed high before the opening period of play came to a close.

Following the break, UC scored its third goal of the game in the 51st minute to push the scoreline to 3-0. The Yellow Jackets went on the front foot from that point forward. In the 68th minute, Brooklyn Pritt had a shot on target that required the keeper to come off her line to make the save. One minute later, Maslak had her shot on goal blocked by a sliding defender on the line after she dribbled around the keeper. West Virginia State was unable to create any better chances in the last 20 minutes of the contest.

WVSU lined up for six corner kicks in the game compared to two by UC. Meanwhile, Charleston converted half of its six shots on target whereas West Virginia State did not convert any of its three shots on goal.

The Yellow Jackets will return home for another MEC matchup with West Liberty on Friday, March 19th. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start.
