West Virginia State falls to Millersville, 85-64

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- The West Virginia State University men's basketball team fell to Millersville, 85-64, in a non-conference road game on Wednesday night. The first half was closely contested, but the game slipped away from WVSU in the second half.

West Virginia State drops to 2-1 overall with the defeat while Millersville jumps to 3-0 on the season with the win.

Fifth-year forward Jeremiah Moore nearly had a double-double with a game-high 22 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets edged Millersville by a single point, 9-8, in the first five minutes of the contest. Bradlee Lewis drained a three-point shot to open the scoring for West Virginia State before Glen Abram sunk four foul shots and added a fastbreak layup off a steal by Dwaine Jones.

The next five minutes went the same way with WVSU edging the Marauders by a single point, 15-14, again. Jeremiah Moore led the charge during the second stretch of action by hitting a jumper and sinking two free throws.

MU seized the lead, 23-18, with five minutes to go in the first half. Two three-pointers made by the Marauders helped them towards their five-point advantage late in the opening half.

The next six points all went to West Virginia State with Jones banking a layup to end the run and give WVSU another one-point lead, 24-23. Millersville then ended the half on a 10-6 run to go into the break up 33-30. Trays by Jones and Abel Elias in the last minute-and-a-half kept the score close at halftime.

The Marauders carried their momentum into the second half and went on a 14-1 run in the first three minutes. Head Coach Bryan Poore used a timeout to slow down the surge with the Yellow Jackets suddenly behind by 16 points, 47-31.

The deficit grew to 21 points, 59-38, over the following five minutes of play. Moore did his part to keep WVSU in the game with a pair of layups at the tail end of the stretch.

An 11-4 run by West Virginia State, capped by a basket from behind the arc by Ernest Jenkins, over the ensuing three minutes cut the deficit to 15 points, 64-49. The comeback was short lived, however, with MU continuing to find ways to score for the remainder of the game. The Yellow Jackets ended the night down by 21 points at the final buzzer.

WVSU will have time to regroup before heading to the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. for the Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off. The Yellow Jackets will take on Virginia Union on Monday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. in the tournament's opening round. The game will be streamed nationally on ESPN+ before coverage moves over to ESPNU the next day.
